Radar for Mariners, Revised Edition

Great book
If you want to know the ins and outs of how to best use radar for safety and navigation this is an excellent book as well as great reference material.Note that this book is a little out of date when it comes to the latest and greatest tech advancements... but it does not matter because it teaches you all the foundations to know how radars really work. If you understand the concepts in this book, having a newer unit like I do means many of the things taught here are automated.... but to really understand it, you need the foundational knowledge.Highly recommend this author. Have also started reading his Marine Weather book and his Celestial Navigation book. Both also great! Thanks David for sharing your knowledge so eloquently!

Best radar manual I've read
Excellent instruction. Concepts, usage, adjustments, interpretation, analysis are all explained and demonstrated very clearly. The only negative is the book hints at the improvements available with AIS, but doesn't actually include it in the material. That's kind of ok since there are always targets without AIS, but it seems like an edition revised in 2013 could usefully say a little more.

Radar for mariners
This is an Excellent Publication for mariners of all levels. I utilize this by handing out a copy to all of my students who are taking the Radar Simulator course. It it just tooo bad that this publication is not IMO approved, nor is the Radar Simulator program which comes with the book. If it were, the $!,000.00 price, which I paid for this licence agreement would be a bargain, compared to the over $15,000.00 licence purchase agreement which I purchased for the approved IMO course of instruction.Captain Mike CalliPrincipal, InstructorCapp's Marine Education

By far the best book on the subject
If you want the best book on radar, choose this one. This is book four on the topic. Some of the classics are notably out dated; and this book tells you how and why. Even the newer ones feel more like technical travel logs compared to this one.

Radar For Mariners
Excellent book! Well writen and provides real nuts and bolts information about how to use your radar and what you can reasonably expect in the way of performance. If you want technical you can get it in this book but, if you just want to know how to turn it on and use it, this is the book for you. Well illustrated and packed with real USEFULL information.

Sailor Thoughts
Street rumor is Radar for Mariners, Revised Edition is the best book on the market. Magazines publishing radar articles know their articles are too old to be useful to boat purchasers. Problem I have with this book is I don't know how I install the platform on my mast for my radar. Also I need to know how I use radar on my sailboat when I'm traveling away from my hometown. I live in Jacksonville, FL, and hurricanes here occur about once every 10 years, and they are mostly rain. Hurricanes in south Florida and west Florida are famous for their winds and building destructions. A few pages on what sailboat should do when hurricanes surrond them would be helpful. American Sailing Association (ASA) is working all these problems in their courses. I have no idea what marine insurance companies want from their customers.

Good book, but....
As mentioned in a previous review, the simulation software is a 5/30 trial, meaning, you can open the trial software only 5 times over a 30 day period. But what may be more significant is that the trial software will not run on a 64 bit computer (even after changing compatibility mode, or starting as an administrator.) At least that has been my experience. All other material (pdf's of plotting aids, radar manuals, screen shots) are accessible.Four stars for lack of compatibility documentation.

The book is great for starting out
The book is great for starting out, as I am, and walks one through in a clear and concise manner. Looking forward to the day I can put the new found knowledge to work at sea!

Highly recommended
I'd already read the RYA radar book but wanted more detail. The extra length of this book was well worth the effort. When I switched on my raymarine radar, I found I could get a lot more out of it: adjusting the various parameters made much more sense, as did the zone alarms and MARPA. I'll still look for a course once lock down eases, but for the moment I'm practicing what it covered on a software radar simulator.Subsequent editions might benefit from the pictures being in colour: I found a couple slightly hard to see. But that wouldn't put me off recommending it to other sailors
