A book of 2 halves
I can understand the criticisms of some of the analogies which the author uses. I too was initially irritated by them however I persevered and I found the second half of the book much more enjoyable. The authors attention to detail is impressive and I like the way he puts Elvisβ comeback in context with what was happening politically in America at the time. Having visited a lot of places in the book I think they are described pretty well. Overall this is a good book and I would recommend it to other fans of The King.

Only partly about the '68 Comeback Special
I have to agree with M. Shortman. For me, the book is a trashy cash-in and does not focus on the '68 Special but on Elvis in the 1960s. Its oh-so-clever literary style is oh-so-irritating. The opening chapter, The Dressing Room, quickly refers to Elvis with the "face of God, sculpted in caramel". On that page, and the following 3 pages, we also have "caramel God face / truest blue laser caramel face / molten caramel trickling down his forehead / molasses and caramel melted as one / more lickable, a caramel prince / in flesh or in caramel". Then we have purported conversations of private meetings (I accept that some of them may have been quoted in other books by the other party). I gave up after the first couple of chapters. After 40 years, we don't need another scurrilous biography - they have long since been done to death. Physically, this hardback book is of lovely quality, especially the covers (though I don't like the photo they chose). But if you want a serious book dealing with Elvis's comeback then you should read Gillian Garr's superb "The Return Of The King".

The Book of Sarcasm
A very high quality product but I found the authors sarcasm very tiring and I am only half way through the book.
