All three instalments of the anime series written by Noboru Aikawa and set in Tokyo 2027. In Part 1 the inhabitants of Mega-Tokyo are being killed by renegade Voomers, the cyborgs they created to do their unwanted jobs. When the Advanced Police are brought in, one of them, Leon, realises a beautiful female Voomer has a special grudge against him. In Part 2 the Paradise Loop subway is stalked by a vicious murderer and the Advanced Police are on the trail of a Voomer-killer who is murdering subway tramps and prostitutes. Whilst in Part 3 the Government enlist in a new project that could do away with the AD Police. Using the remains of a critically wounded officer Billy Farnwood, they create an experimental Anti-Voomer Cyborg. However, once transformed, Billy feels trapped in an unfeeling metal shell and unable to cope with the feelings of pain and anger. The scene is set for a running battle through the corridors of AD Police headquarters.

Are we human, or are we Voomers?
A great movie set in the "Bubblegum Crisis" universe where cybernetic implants are readily available - there are separate stories told here that examine the question: "at what point does a human with cybernetic implants cease to be human?" It culminates in the story of a "Robocop" style cyborg who is regarded as intellectual property and an object by his creator and as a human by his fellow AD police colleagues - among whom is a former lover. At what point does existence become a burden and death a consummation devoutly to be wish'd?

AD Police files
A warning for anime purists - this DVD release has only got an English dub - there is no Japanese soundtrack, which is a crying shame as the Animeigo release on the other side of The Pond has both an English and a Japanese dub. If you really want this series I would recommend the region 1 release. As a fan of Bubblegum Crisis, both original (which I prefer) and 2040 (which still rocks) I just had to buy this. It is set before Bubblegum Crisis, though in the same universe, and concentrates on the activities of the AD Police. The Knight Sabers do not make an appearance, and the only character from BGC is Leon McNicholl. Sadly, Daly is not in this. The quality of the animation is mostly good for the time (early 90s) though the style of anime changes between the first and the second episode. Also, in the last two episodes, though the style of animation improves, there is a tendency to drop into badly drawn still frames to tell bits of the story, which may suggest some difficulties in production. The stories, though, are good, very intelligent, based in a similar cyberpunk universe to Blade Runner, where the question always asked is - in a world where life is becoming more and more mechanised, what is the importance of being human? The stories are also much darker, with a reasonable amount of violence and sex.If you loved the original Bubblegum Crisis, then this is an important addition to your collection. If you have not seen Bubblegum Crisis, then this works as dark science fiction. For the stories, most of the animation and the atmosphere and dark tone of this series, I would have given it four stars, but because of the glitches in the quality of the animation, and because this DVD has no Japanese sound track, I give it three stars.
