After making a list of the supplies they'll need, Strawberry Shortcake, Apple Dumpling, their cantankerous cat Custard, and their overly enthusiastic puppy Cupcake consult the map and head out into Strawberry land in search of things like juice, cake, and party hats. The adventuresome group meets lots of new friends like Gingersnap, Orange Blossom, and Huckleberry Pie, and learns to value friendship and diversity along the way. Certain plot points, such as a journey with a map and a cat who writes with its tail, serve as an over-sweetened, 1980s premonition of newer shows like Dora the Explorer and Sagwa while the automated cookie machine begs comparison to the 1971 Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Nonetheless, girls ages 2 to 6 will very likely gobble-up this animated show like a bowl of breakfast cereal--but hopefully not the strawberry-scented DVD box.
