Crochet for beginners
Great read. I even learned a few new tricks. I would highly recommend to others. Found just what I've been looking for

I loved this book
I am going to buy this book! The break down of stitches and patterns really has helped me. I have been crocheting for many years but have never been able to step up my game because patterns were too hard to read. I am going to try with the help of this book. It also has directions for left handed crochet! I will be purchasing two of these books. One for me, and one for my left handed niece.

A good effort
What I like: good photo illustrations, good instructions for basic stitches, a few useful patterns (scarf, beanie, ear warmers). Has a few photos of what left-handed crochet looks like. What I don't like: no index, so to look up something, you have to keep flipping through until you find what you need. Of course, the best way to learn crochet is with videos, but this may be useful to a beginner.

works great to understand what I am doing.
This explains how to make things. Great way to learn how to do something.

Hurts my head
I would have given this book 1 star except it appears to have helped others, so I am giving it the benefit of the doubt. I am a rank beginner with crochet. I watched a couple of videos and made a granny square, but I wanted written directions to refer to, so I got this book. There are so many problems with it that I don't even know where to begin. However, I would never recommend it, especially for a beginner unless you want to sit and cry with frustration. I will give you two examples of the kinds of problems I had with the book.First: Single Crochet Stitch. If you go to the explanation, there are two paragraphs about it. Which is fine. I read the first paragraph and then stumbled over the second, which began with the words: Another commonly used stitch... Which implies we are now moving on to a different stitch, except that the rest of the paragraph is more or less a repeat of the first paragraph. It totally confused me, but in the end, I just shrugged and moved on.Second: As I said, I wanted written directions for a granny square to refer to because if I go a few days without doing any crochet, I'm going to forget what little I learned from the videos. So I went to the granny square directions. It says to start with a magic ring. Fine. I searched and found the section on magic rings, because the videos I watched for granny squares just started with a simple chain and slip stich (I think that's what it was called when I looped around to the first stitch in the chain). The directions on a magic ring were impossible to follow. I still have no idea what was supposed to be done, except that the pictures looked like my video where it was a simple chain/slip stich, which is not a magic ring. So I looked that up on the Internet and found what a magic ring was, and it isn't what was described in the book as far as I can tell, but the directions were so poorly written that I can't be sure. So...fine. In the directions for the magic ring, though, it said that the pattern would say how many chain stitches you needed. Ok. I went back to the directions for the granny square in the book. It just says to start with a magic ring. No indication of how many stiches this should be. So right there, I stopped and bought another book.Yes, there are directions. If you already know some basics, you can muddle through the patterns, but you'll just have to make wild guesses when patterns start with things like, make a magic ring.Personally, I couldn't make head nor tail of the basics, despite the profuse illustrations. It is poorly written (or poorly edited, or both) in an extremely confusing way and I am not sure you can rely on it for being accurate on any particular stitch given my experience with the frustrating example of a magic ring. (There is a very good blog with pictures and an example of what a magic ring really is.) But, I'm giving the book 3 stars because maybe it's just my own twisted brain that can't deal with this book (although I find UK books much more clearly written despite the differences in the terminology and names of stitches).
