Not a NYSC disc
This was listed as a NTSC region free dvd and absolutely is not. I live in the U.S. and when loading the disc, all I see is a notice on my screen that it won't play on this device. It's played on a standard dvd player, not a computer or game console so I don't know what the issue is except this listing was misleading about the disc playing on all dvd players. Very disappointing.

I feel like I got ripped off
I can't watch it because it is a Region 2 disc and can't be played on my DVD player. Also there was no designation on the website indicating it was Region 2. No warning whatsoever. I feel like I got ripped off.

the greatest disco film
What an amazing, sexy and affecting film this is - doing for disco what Velvet Goldmine did for glam rock. And disco is much better as music, I think, even if Todd Haynes's film is certainly its equal for other reasons. The story is stronger in VG, but the actual look of the film, the transport of the music scenes, the lighting, all these are about as sublime as can be imagined in this one. Early on Ryan Phillippe is told to "lose the shirt" with definiteness by Mike Myers' club owner, but actually I don't think I've ever seen a shirt look better. Phillippe as Shane looks and acts like a dream, and in this, the director's cut, the character's bisexuality is to the fore in a fantasy world where sex, drugs and great music (the year is 1979, in New York) combine to give a feeling out of this world. It doesn't seem at all cheesy or fake, but actually something of beauty - the aura of the dance space taking over as the place where life becomes its most intense and meaningful for these denizens of the night, and where all natural boundaries dissolve, at least until the morning, Mark Christopher wrote and directed it, having made the brilliant short The Dead Boys' Club in 1992; I haven't seen the cinema release version from 1998, but it seems as if Christopher's film was totally pulled apart by the studio to make it more audience-friendly. This recut version of the film, dating from the 2015 Berlin Festival, must be the one to see, containing 44 minutes of restored footage, much of it with gay content that had previously been scrapped. Christopher shoots with such tenderness, such a feeling for mood, that slightly rough moments in the sequencing or plot handling don't seem to matter, adding to it like another element in a collage - even the grainier look of some of the restored sequences seems to add further texture. Myers is excellent at getting the sleazy note of his character, nevertheless conveying a heart somewhere, while Salma Hayek is very beautiful as Anita, as is Breckin Meyer (Greg), a straight wrestler married to her, turned barman at the legendary club. Shane moves in with them, also working at the bar, and complex feelings develop, Shane seemingly attracted to both. The guys wear these amazing short green shorts when at work, with no top, that make them look 2 hot 2 handle as the action happens amid tracks by people like Sylvester, The Ritchie Family, Gary's Gang, Diana Ross, Chic, Bohannon, Rose Royce, GQ, Bonnie Pointer, and The Miracles' Love Machine making you think IF ONLY ... it's pure pleasure. The German release has the advantage of being Region 2, with either the original English soundtrack or dubbed into German. The German subtitles are optional on the English version.
