Q: Is it supposed to drain automatically, I don't understand how to get the water out-I switched the gear to drain and nothing happened?

The short hose needs to be laid down lower than the level of water. It drains by gravity, not a water pump. I personally place the machine on a waterproof box a little higher than the toilet, and let the water drain into that. Yes, it's a pain in the a**, but it still is Better than washing clothes in the sink.
