It's Great To Go Green!
I just finished reading "Green Juicing Diet: Green Juice Detox Plan for Beginners" written by John Chapman and published by Telamon Press. This books packs a lot of good information into 90 pages and I really enjoyed reading it.Chapman starts by giving us a great rationale for juicing. Because we are more educated about the interaction between food and aging and disease, we've become more selective about what we put into our bodies. Cooking often damages the enzymes in food and reduces the efficiency of the nutrients found in food and it also takes 5-8 hours for your body to absorb these nutrients. Consume a healthy glass of juice and your body absorbs 95% of the nutrients within 15 minutes! Using green vegetables and fruits increases the quotient of chlorophyll you are consuming whereas cooking decreases that chlorophyll content. He does caution us to limit our consumption of fruit because he says diseases feed on sugar and can contribute to weight gain. The book also denotes the difference between blending and juicing (it all comes down to pulp), gives tips on how to choose the right blender or juicer and lists the nutritional values and health benefits of many common fruits and vegetables as well as gives advice on pairing for the best flavor and also gives us the yield of juice from 1 lb. of each fruit or vegetable. I loved this section and when I read all the benefits of different fruits and vegetables, I wanted to run out to the store and purchase all the organic, fresh produce I could find! We also learn the proper ratio of ingredients in the perfect green juice and how to temper some of the stronger juices with sweeter, milder ingredients such as cucumber juice. Also included is what seems like very valuable advice on how to go about conducting a juice cleanse, including what to do ahead of time, what the health benefits are and the potential side effects. If you have not done a cleanse before it can come as a major shock to your body and you may want to gradually eliminate things like caffeine and tobacco ahead of time and also take a few days off from your regular work schedule or start on the weekend. Lastly, Chapman includes some great recipes to get us started. This is a very handy book. I would love to have seen all the health benefits of the fruits and vegetables laid out in a handy chart I could put on my wall. My only other criticism is that we don't know where he got all his information from and what his credentials are, so I don't know how much value to place on the claims he makes such as one of the benefits of a cleanse is that you will have increased energy and feel 10 years younger. But overall, this is a great primer on green juicing and I hope to try my own cleanse soon!

Great for New Juicers
For any of us trying to get in better shape and in better health, it can become a complicated path if you are reading the right information. So, picking up this book, I initially thought I was down that road again. But after reading the first few pages I realized that this was more than just another way for me to lose weight - it was a way to cleanse my body of toxins and put myself onto a healthier road.Thinking of green juicing gives you the idea of blending celery stalks into a blender and chugging it down. But after reading this book, I realized that green juicing and green smoothies are so much more than that. True, the book does state that "green juice is any juice that is the color green," it also provides detailed information on how to make your juices and smoothies taste better, while also providing certain recipes that cater to your weight, health needs, weight loss goals and even towards certain ailments. The book does provide instruction on how to approach this type of diet, and even warns against doing a juice cleanse immediately without first consulting a doctor. It advises to do your cleans for no longer than 7 days, which gave me a better feeling about trying this out.The other aspect this book helps with is what exactly to buy. This type of diet is not cheap, but the book does go into details on which blenders and juicers you should buy, from the inexpensive ones you may find at the local grocery stores to the ones you may want to buy if you consider green juicing and smoothies part of your lifestyle. What I liked the most about this book are the information it gives on the fruits, vegetables and herbs that you can add to your recipes. From the sweet flavor of the apple that can help cut the nastiest of a juice or smoothie gone bad, to the green grassy flavors of the kale.I highly recommend this book if you are considering this diet and want a quick short read that is filled with the right information you need to get started. So many books overwhelm you with information and this book provides enough details so that the diet seems manageable and possible.
