"Social Background of Indian Nationalism" now enjoys the status of a classic. Worked as a PhD dissertation by A.R.Desai in University of Bombay under the supervision of renowned Sociologist G.S.Ghurye, it first came into being as a book in 1946. It went through subsequent revisions and reprints. The very fact that apart from R. Palme Dutt's "India To-Day" and Jawaharlal Nehru's "The Discovery of India", this book remained the only example of a single volume study of the whole modern India and evolution of nationalism, be it, social, economic, and political facet, makes it relevant even today. Approached with Marxist historical materialism perspective, the book in its latest offering comes with a Foreword written by Sumit Sarkar who contextualises the book for its significant place in the historiography of Indian nationalism.

Excellent book with each chapter complete on its own. The chapter on the evolution of Indian press is of special interest. It is the kind of book that will remain indispensable as a standard reference work even in the distant future just as it is now, though Desai had written it quite a while back.

The book is really nice and worth reading. It covers every aspect related to foundation of Nationalism in India. A must read.

Content is great..once you read this book you will easily imagine the past of our society and changing definition of nationalism. For UPSC student this book is great.Cons:Page quality is not good, and sometime I have to see dictionary for understanding the context.
