Julius Caesar (Dual Format) "Screenbound" issue: Very poor BD, DVD is more watchable
Please note that many reviews here are currently erroneously referenced to the Spanish release. This is about the "Screenbound" UK issue. What's wrong with the BD here is, if normal films run at 24 fps, this looks like 10 fps, so all movements are juddered, specially noticeable when the camera pans. The DVD is relatively watchable. I wonder what they (screenbound, itv) have done with the film - it looked normal when it was first released. The film is hardly my favourite. Frankly dour, particularly with the poor BD quality. The costumes are terrible, more reminiscent of opera costumes (of course before the current trend of euro trash set in) than real Roman which one is used to from better epics (sure, they may be not right either, but usually more watchable than this picture's) and statues ubiquitous in Italy, etc.

Caesar Too Late!
Although Julius Caesar has an impressive cast, which includes the likes of Charlton Heston, Jason Robards, Richard Johnson, Robert Vaughn, etc., unfortunately it does somewhat lack scope for a film of this kind due to it's budget limitations, which are evident. I imagine had this been made several years earlier during the height and popularity of this kind of epic, it would certainly have had the kind of budget enjoyed by El Cid or The Fall of the Roman Empire, whose failure in fact pretty much effectively killed off the grand epics. It's still a very watchable film, but due to a considerable amount of footage being lost at the editing stage, the film loses that grandeur one associates with epics, and ultimately comes across as rather stagey. It does have it's moments though; the climax, although satisfactorily impressive, it's not on a large enough scale as one might expect. To sum it up, certainly worth watching, but a major disappointment in view of what it could have been.

Shakespeare's Julius Caesar 1970 Film
I've just been transported back 50 years, when as 14 year olds we were sitting in the classroom staring at Shakespeare's words and not connecting with them at all. Our English Literature teacher took the unprecedented step of asking for and being given permission to take the class to see this film, which was showing in a local cinema at the time. Seeing these great actors/actresses speaking and performing the play on screen was a revelation. They lifted a veil and brought clarity to the Great Bard's words, bringing out all the emotions of each of the characters within. It has stayed with me ever since and now I can enjoy it again with fresh eyes through the wonders of DVD/Blu Ray. I hope you get the same gratification from it as I did at age 14 and still do now at 64.

CERTAINLY NOT a great movie, but not a bad film either
CERTAINLY NOT a great movie, but not a bad film either! ORSON WELLES should have directed it: shame it was BURGE who got the job,JASON ROBARDS played BRUTUS: shame ORSON didn't play it instead, he was first choice and pulled out of the movie for obscure reasons...WHAT REMAINS of this movie, nearly forty-seven years later ? charlton HESTON's excellent performance as ANTONY, vastly superior to BRANDO's in my view, JOHNSON's very angry and bitter CASSIUS, a few good action scenes and GIELGUD's placid and soft-spoken CAESAR..Not that bad a movie, come to think of it!

Unwatchable bad picture and sound
The quality of the DVD is terrible, the picture and sound quality is terrible making it unwatchable. Avoid it at all costs.I had to throw it in the dustbin, will know next time not to buy from this seller.Shouldn't have been put up for sale with such bad quality.

Odd but interesting
Really? Charlton Heston??? However that said, the rest of the cast is very fine indeed in this TV adaptation of Shakespeare's play. Worth investigating
