A Modern Classic in a Shirt Pocket
The Baofeng UV5R Mini is a compact handheld transceiver that delivers both convenience and solid performance. What impressed me first was the ease of programming. I can set it up directly from my iPhone using available apps, or connect to Chirp on my computer for more advanced adjustments. Having both options makes it simple to update frequencies whether I am at home or out in the field. The size is one of its best qualities. It slips comfortably into a shirt pocket and immediately reminded me of the Alinco credit card sized handhelds from years past, though this model is a bit thicker. For anyone who values portability, this is a radio that can be carried daily without feeling bulky or intrusive. Performance is strong for such a small package. On 70cm it puts out a full 5.2 watts, and on the high end of VHF it produces 4.9 watts. That is nearly the same power you would expect from larger handhelds, but in a pocket sized form factor. The transmit power makes a real difference when trying to reach a distant repeater or when operating in areas with weaker coverage. The audio quality is clear and reliable, and the battery has shown itself to be more than adequate for typical use. Controls are straightforward, and the screen is easy enough to read despite the smaller size of the radio. For me, the UV5R Mini hits a sweet spot. It combines the nostalgia of past ultra compact transceivers with the practicality of modern features and programming flexibility. It is a smart choice for anyone who wants a dependable handheld that is easy to carry, simple to set up, and still delivers real power when needed. In short, this little radio punches well above its weight. It has become one of my favorite handhelds to carry, proving that you do not need to sacrifice performance for portability.

Excellent
Excellent radios! They are very small and have a good feel in the hand. I was easily able to program them with CHIRP. So far I haven't been able to find extra batteries for them but I'm sure they must be available. The pair came with the charging cables but no power block. I have to use a USB-C power block that I have for my phone. There are several useful keyboard shortcuts that I found on-line like reverse frequencies and the weather channels. They came "open" so I can have the GMRS channels programmed. Whether that's legal or not is up for debate but it's useful for our Emergency Communications group, ARES. The normal flex antenna seems to work well and the included gain antenna seems to be even better.

good radio
use them at work. since these have more Tx power than the ones at work, they can hear me but can't hear them. the frequency clone button is great. I can set my channels to any other radio frequency and talk to them with a simple copy. good radio. good value. easy to charge with c- type charger. usually get about 2 days of good solid use needing to charge. would be nice if there was more discrimination in the squelch range. overall good radio..

Solid Little Radio with Lots of Features
I picked up this Baofeng UV-5R Mini to mess around with on hikes and during family outings, and it works pretty well for the size. The range is decent, and the sound is clear once you get it tuned right. Having USB-C charging is a big plus since I can top it off with a power bank. The body feels sturdy enough, though the menu takes a bit of learning at first. Overall, a handy little radio that’s worth the effort to get familiar with.

Great Deal
What a great deal. The build quality is very good. They feel solid and come with everything you need to get started. They're compact and work great. I bought them to put in a emergency bag. Highly recommended for the price. Nice amateur starter radios.

Kinda fun I had as a kid with Bluetooth programming on the fly!
I got a pair and immediately gave one away, not thinking I would be smitten! While it's not IP67 like my Yaesu, it's small enough to go in a pocket and never get wet unless I fall in some water. My keeper receives all the local Emergency Services, as well as Ham Radio on the respective VHF/UHF bands nicely after antenna upgrade and even transmits on most if I ever really need it. Did I mention how small it is compared to my actual scanner, which is mostly what I use it for?!? I can charge it with a cellphone power bank if needed too, but doubt that will ever happen. Bottom line for me is, I got TWO very functional two way radios for less than Dinner alone in a Steakhouse 🤗

Not for beginners
Too complicated for me! Writing too small, not enough directions given.

Strong units, spectrally clean.
If you want a mini miracle HT, look no further. I hooked these to the TinySA and measured no spurs in both the 2m and 70cm bands. Power is also measured at 5W on high. You can easily program with Chirp as well. I put on a Signal Stick dual band antenna and haven’t looked back. Granted, I still use my FT5DR, this is a cheaper unit to just throw in the gear bag and not worry about.
