JAPANESE ART: THE COLOURING BOOK

the quality and details of pictures is not at all good, the paper is an ordinary one
Being an Artist, I was really excited to order this book to check out the master's strokes and details. Alas, the quality and details of pictures is not at all good, the paper is an ordinary one.Nevertheless, This could be a colouring book for kids who want to try a little different colouring experience. I wish the author had provided some more substance and done justice to the artist who drew such amazing classics!

Handy
Beautiful Hokusai works

A brilliant idea but the execution could have been a little better
I'd probably rate this 3.5 starsThere is no doubt that this is a lovely introduction to the artist (who I wasn't particularly familiar with before looking at this book even though I recognised a couple of the paintings) and it includes colour pictures of 20 of Katsushika Hokusai's paintings along with a black and white version that readers can colour in for themselves. There is a short introduction to each painting giving a little information about when it was first created and and what it depicts which was nice. Then you have a 2 page spread with a colour print of the picture on the left page and a black and white line drawing on the right page for colouring in. I was pleased that the back of the colouring page is left blank so even though it's quite thick paper you could use ink to colour with and not worry about any bleed through.I was a little disappointed that the colour versions of the paintings weren't a little bigger though, I've attached a couple of pictures so you'll see what I mean but the colour version is much smaller than the black and white version. It just means you end up with a lot of white space around some of the paintings and it would have been better if the images were larger. I also thought that they could have included a bit more detailing in the line drawings, I get that they'll never be able to include all of the details as a lot of the effect will be created by shading but you'll notice a lot of fine detailing missing from the more complex paintings.I do love that you have the colour image next to the black and white version so that you can either copy the colour scheme or if you're feeling adventurous you could go with something completely different and end up with something really unique. They have included a fantastic selection of Katsushika Hokusai's paintings and I think this would make a lovely gift for anyone who is interested in Japanese culture or anyone interested in art in general.

An absolute delight to hold, feel, read... and colour.
Absolutely delightful. Large pictures to colour....The text is informative with a wonderful introduction. There is a coloured pictorial contents list. Each work has two pages, the linework page has the title on the back and the other has a smaller colour rendition of the original, with a title and explanatory text on the reverse... so its "Title/explanation""colour picture""picture TO colour""title".This thing is beautiful to just browse... it would be a shame to remove pages but from the layout that's what I suspect is the intention...Absolutely delightful.

A Pleasure to read and colour
Fantastic book so pleased with it. A copy of each of the original pictures is shown in colour on one page, on the facing page your ready to colour print and on the following page a short piece telling the reader the name of the picture and alittle about the original picture. It is so tastefully done I don't think anyone could be disappointed, certainly NOT ME.
