For the curious only...
Chances are anyone thinking of buying this already has the hugely over-rated Roots anyway, so this review is for those of you wondering whether or not to shell out for the second disc.First and foremost, this is a proper, decent re-release from back in the days when Roadrunner made more of an effort than one or two bonus tracks and a poorly-shot documentary. A full CD of twenty songs as well as extensive liner notes and rare images, there's a fair bit of effort put into this release. The only thing is, it's a bit of a mixed bag when it comes to the actual songs, many of which are alternate mixes barely different from the original or live versions taken from the Under Siege video from 1991. These tracks and the Scott Burns mixes of the Arise tracks are the only exclusives here: all other tracks have since been added to reissues, some appear on the vastly superior compilation Blood-Rooted. The alternately mixed tracks are barely distinguishable from the original versions either, save for a bit of extra reverb. The cover versions are much more interesting, featuring fiesty versions of Dead Kennedys, R.D.P and Mutantes songs. The best track on offer here is easily the immensely fun "Anticop" an upgrade of an older less-valid song about Satan, now reflective of Max Cavalera's hatred for the police.Overall, for those who don't have Roots this is the best version of that album to buy, as that way you'll get a bit more value for your money. However, for those already in possession of the rest of the band's major releases, this has extremely little value.
