4.5 Stars. Martin: Portrait of a Vampire. Dvd features below.
There are a lot of sick people in the world and that is true horror. Sure vampires are scary when your young and there are a lot of movies that make them erotic and cool but what if someone who was mentally ill really thought they were a vampire and killed people? Maybe a sick person would drug there victims so they are asleep, we wouldn't have the victim experience ecstasy or climax when the fangs sink in as in the movies but they would be totally vulnerable to this individuals fetishes and fantasies. We'll say this person can eat garlic, wears a cross, can go out in the light, can fix his hair in the mirror, yet still has a craving for blood. Perhaps this person came from a dysfunctional and unstable family that also believed in curses and vampires and believed this mentally sick person to also be a vampire, maybe this persons mother who believes it and suffered from her own mental illness and depression that she killed herself because of it. What I've just described is Martin who goes to live with his elderly cousin, a Van Helsing type who believes him to be Nosferatu, he plans on saving Martin's soul then destroying him.Martin is also sexually confused, he is aroused by making sexy stuff with his victims while they are asleep and drinking there blood. In modern day with the invention of the internet people are exposed to every fetish including vampire fetish however in Martin's case along with being a fetish it is also a delusion and an obsession. Again with the internet we can talk to people from a very young age through chat services and be exposed to things at the speed of light, everyday becoming more desensitized to things that are taboo.Everything in this film plays real as did Henry - Portrait of a Serial Killer (20th Anniversary) and the characters are believable. I believe this to be one of George A. Romero's best films along with Night of the Living Dead (Millennium Edition) and Dawn of the Dead (Ultimate Edition) .Along with Martin being one of the most original spins on the vampire theme, it contains some action, and plenty of suspense. There are times when you find yourself actually nervous for Martin as you were for Norman Bates in Psycho when the car stopped sinking briefly into the bog, we as viewers were almost routing for Norman and at times I found that with Martin. Perhaps we feel for them because they both were sick people who needed help, were victims of there upbringing, and both looked innocent. Maybe it is because both films were made by great directors that know how to play the audience. This is a must for any fan of George A. Romero. Also a must for fans of vampire films that are open to original ideas, and horror fans in general.**Dvd Special Features**-New 16:9 Widescreen transfer from hd. New 5.1 dolby digital audio-New commentary from G. Romero. R. Rubenstein. T. Savini. M. Gornick. And D. Rubenstein.-New photo gallery . Making of Martin: A Recounting. Original tv spots and trailer.

Romero at his most brilliant
This is the kind of perfect, subtle, horrific tale I wish they made more of.It's a component of the 70's.Romero exerting a unique creativity.Just superb storytelling.________________________________________Martin is a misunderstood reject of society. A nocturnal misfit with a thirst for human blood. So does that make him a vampire? He has no fangs. Garlic and crucifixes have no effect. And the sun just causes mild irritation. He injects people with needles to knock them out, and then makes his cut.________________________________________With this tale of horror, less is definitely more. Romero masterfully intertwines comedy, satire, irony, sexuality, suspense, and gore into this cult vampire classic. Excellent, don't miss it....

Classic Romero
Martin qualifies as a classic twist on the vampire take but leaves the audience asking for more with a disappointing ending.

Martin 1977
i just recieved my dvd of Martin, written and directed by George A. Romero. sold by Noram International Partners, Inc. the dvd arrived early, was listed as "like new" and is in the original case, with neither a scratch on the case or on the disk. This is a great little cult film, and Newsweek was correct in saying that Romero's "balance of wit and horror is the best since Hitchcock..." if youre a George Romero fan who hasnt seen this here movie, you need to buy it now, you will NOT be disapointed. this is Romero's first work with Tom Savini, make up, stuntman and actor, whom he would next work with on Dawn of the Dead.

Liked this movie.
This is like a great example of low budget independent film making. Interesting story line. Was that George A. Romero playing the priest?

One of Romero's best films
Martin is one of the best horror films in history. To me martin is my favorite horror serial killer wanna be vampire in film. Actually he is the only character in film history that I know of that thinks he is a vampire but is not. If you are or not a George A. Romero fan, but are a horror fan this is a must have film.

This in NOT widescreen
My favorite film - kinda. The 'new widescreen edition' is actually the full screen with the top and bottom of the image blocked out to create a letter box effect, so you are actually seeing less of the picture. Despicable. The picture/sound quality is the same as on the other two DVDs I have. However, this edition has a new 10 minute documentary with interviews with Savini, Romero, Donald Rubinstein and Christine Forest - but not Amplas, unfortunately. I have the trailer on another edition but I think the 10 second TV spot is new. I am a collector of this movie so no harm done but if you are buying it for the first time buy one of the two other versions for the full screen and not this exploitative con. Classic vampire tale from zombie master George Romero.
A classic vampire film with an unusual twist by the zombie master Romero. Impossible to find streaming or through iTunes these days, the DVD is worth every penny. The ending is unique and the story (set in the post-industrial, depression of Penn) is compelling and strange. One of the best vampire films of the 1970s.
