Great insights into the musical side of Bill Monroe & the Bluegrass Boys
Bob Black writes clearly and from a musician's perspective. His anecdotes illustrated the songwriting process, and the interaction among band members who travelled long distances with little sleep and for little pay, but loved the experience because they loved the music they played, their fellow band members, and respected their leader, Bill Monroe. More than anything, it showed Bill Monroe to be passionately committed to Bluegrass music and to anyone interested in hearing Bluegrass music. Bob Black's book shows Bill Monroe to be more than worthy of the "Father of Bluegrass" title he acquired. Anyone who loves bluegrass music or is interested in finding out what makes so many people enjoy it would enjoy this book.

Bob Black talks Bluegrass music and Bill Monroe
Like Gene Lowinger's book on playing with Bill Monroe in the Bluegrass Boys this is another work from inside the belly of the bluegrass beast. Black is no more a professional writer than Lowinger but anyone wishing to know more about bluegrass music, the effort it requires to play it, the time it takes to get it right, and the degree of patience you need to work for a man as powerful as Bill Monroe can not do much better than to read this book. Bob Black is still out there playing banjo like the Devil dancin' on a hot plate at full temp and God bless him for his picking and for this worthy volume.

Banjo Player Reviews A Banjo Player
Being a banjo player for 30 years gave me a keen interest in a book being written by a banjo player about Bill Monroe, the "Father of Bluegrass." This book gave insights not only to what it was like being a banjo player for Bill Monroe, but also insights about Bill Monroe, the man himself, that one would not find outside of this book. This book takes you along for the ride on the road with Bill Monroe and his Bluegrass Boys, and gives the reader the closest thing possible to being a member of the band. Highly recommended.

Bob's book is a no nonsense look at what life was like for a Bluegrass Boy in the later years of Bills life. I thought the book was a great read!

Book not read yet but looking good.
Have only read a few lines being I'm too busy and looks to be a good interesting read so I know I'll like this book. I'm a big Monroe fan and bluegrass lover so could be biased. Will update this after reading it.
