Notes: largest of any American hardwood. Large, wide spreading limbs. Leaves are large, palmately veined, four to ten inches across, with a shiny green top suface and pale underneath. Bark is mottled with browns, yellows, and greens against a white background. Single buttonball fruits have a hairy nut-like seeds hanging from a slender stem. Valuable timber tree. Wildlife: Seed is eaten by a wide variety of birds.
