A Dynasty That Wasn't
Across professional sports one could recall at least a few potential dynasties that never took off, but the Orlando Magic of the mid-Nineties has to be near the top of the list. This episode of "30 for 30" looks back at how bad luck and poor management derailed the team that could have gone on to become one of the most memorable in NBA history. The episode begins by recalling the birth of the Magic franchise—many were not sure the NBA would even prosper in Central Florida. The team had the expected rocky first few years, won the draft lottery in 1992 to land Shaquille O'Neal, showed marked improvement in Shaq's rookie year, and then won the draft lottery in 1993, which led to the acquisition of Anfernee "Penny" Hardaway. The '94 season ended with a disappointing first-round exit for the young, inexperienced Magic, but the future looked bright when free agent Horace Grant joined an already-loaded team. The 1995 campaign was the peak for that Magic team, and the episode recalls the impressive regular season the team had and its playoff wins over the Celtics, the Michael Jordan-led Bulls, and the Pacers. The Magic fell to the Rockets in the Finals, but the team expected to make many more trips to the championship series. The team never made it that far again, though. There was dissension on the team, followed by the departure of O'Neal after the 1996 season when the Magic amazingly let a potential dynasty dissolve when they would not get out the checkbook to make sure Shaq stayed. There have been many great episodes in the "30 for 30" catalog, and this is certainly one of them.

This Magic Moment
If you were a fan of the Orlando Magic, Penny Hardaway, Shaq, 90's NBA basketball fan, or all the above, you'll love this gripping film that shows how Orlando got their franchise, how they seemed to have a title or two locked up, and then the pain that came when tragedy struck the small market team.

At first I thought it was a bootleg copy...
I have not watched this DVD yet so my rating is not based on the content. Immediately upon taking this DVD out of the bubble mailer Amazon mailed this in, I thought this looked fishy. The artwork is off center, the images look faded and it looks an amateur designed it. I seriously thought of returning it prior to removing the shrink wrap. I decided to take a photo first, then open it. I took the art sleeve out thinking it was going to be cheap printer paper, but it wasn't, it feels high quality. I looked at the ink in the light and it looked very clear even though the images on the front and back look dull and faded. I then took a close look at the DVD, I thought for sure that it was going to be a label slapped on, but it wasn't, it looks to be legit. I flipped the DVD over just to make sure it wasn't a DVD-R, but it is not. The back you can clearly seethat this is a pressed DVD, there is small print of the title around the center hole, it's not a bootleg. Hopefully I will enjoy watching this!

Good analysis on the break up of this team
It is been a while since I've seen the steam. I had some misconceptions about why they failed and broke up. This explained it quite clearly. Furthermore, hearing from Penny and shack explain behind the scene matters was quite entertaining for an old school NBA fan. I always judge NBA documentaries by how well they handle the playoffs, that's usually where the action is, I thought there could've been a little bit more but they did handle and explain Nick Anderson's role quite well in the first defeat and then decline in 1994-1995 NBA finals.

Letting Shaq go was a very big mistake.
I really enjoyed this Magic Moment DVD. It was a great watch, telling the story of the Orlando magic of the mid 90's and how the team became a contender because of winning the Draft Lottery in back to back years 92 & 93.The Magic had all the talent and pieces to become a multi time NBA Champion. Poor management of Shaq's contract led to the downfall of the franchise. They didn't want to pay him what he wanted so he took his talents to The LA Lakers. The Magic were never the same after Shaq left. They just should have sign him for what he was worth, and they would have probably won Multiple Championships. They didn't and they are still trying to recover to this day, from the decision they made with Shaquille O'Neal contract and not making him a 100 Million Dollar player in the game at that time. Great dvd, I highly recommend it.
