Ecover looks to nature for inspiration, sourcing plant-based and mineral ingredients. Not only can naturally derived ingredients be made into effective cleaning products, they are typically renewable, biodegrade quickly and completely, have a low aquatic toxicity and are gentle to your skin. While there are many definitions, they believe ecological products are in balance with the rest of nature. So Ecover developed a unique model they call the Diamond Model that’s managed by an independent auditor. They want to understand every part of each product’s journey—from ingredient sourcing to product disposal, and everything in between. Phosphates - What is the problem with using phosphates? A phosphate is a molecule that’s often added to detergents to soften water so that the surfactants can clean better. One phosphate isn’t bad, but when they travel in masses to our lakes, ponds, rivers and streams, algae feast on them and eventually die. Then bacteria comes in, feasts on the dead algae while using up all the oxygen in the water. No oxygen, of course, means life cannot survive. That’s very scary… and it’s why Ecover doesn't use phosphates in any of theirr products. Are Ecover products suitable for vegans and vegetarians? Yes. All of their products sold in North America are suitable for vegans and vegetarians. Plus they never test on animals – they have a Leaping Bunny on their bottle to prove it. How does Ecover measure the biodegradability of its products? Ecover starts at the beginning with the right ingredients, selecting those that meet their criteria for fast and complete biodegradability—not just for surfactants but for every ingredient they use. They test how well products biodegrade using a variety of industry standard models and tests, including a working replica of biodegradation in nature. Does Ecover use preservatives? Yes. Liquid products require preservatives to stop the growth of bacteria and microorganisms so they don’t decay in the bottle while on the supermarket shelf. The total preservative content in their products varies from 0% to 0.02%. Plantplastic All Ecover bottles are made using Plantplastic. This is their proprietary plant-sourced plastic made from sugarcane. Ecover takes sustainably harvested sugarcane and refines it into sugar. The sugar is then fermented and distilled to produce ethanol. The ethanol is dehydrated to produce ethylene, which is polymerized to produce the plastic. They chose sugarcane specifically because sugar drives the fermentation process. By starting with a high sugar plant, the process is much more efficient than using a less sweet plant, like corn or beets. And they don't stop there. Pre-Treat: Pour a small amount of detergent directly onto stain. Rub in and wash garment as usual. Wash: For HE washers use dispenser. For standard washers, start machine and add detergent before adding clothes.
