Great whistle! But I like the "new" version slightly better.
This is a great whistle. The only reason I can't give it 5 stars is because the "new" Windstorm Safety Whistle is slightly better. This is a loud whistle that makes a substantial sound without much effort. The new version is yellow, a little smaller and makes a louder sound with less effort. Both are excellent whistles. See my pic to see the slight size difference.

life saver
I'm going to tell you a little story, true story at that.So my wife and family have always thought my preparedness efforts were a lil bit kooky, and when this showed up in the mail the week before we celebrated the 4th of July at the lake they were giving me a hard time about buying a whistle to keep in my EDC bag aka murse.... well we get to the lake and prepare to head out in a friends boat to watch fireworks, 4 adults and 6 kids. The lake is big and choppy and it is known for the HUGE boats on it due to the size of the lake. We get almost to the other side to watch fireworks and my buddy says he's low on gas but should have enough to make it back no problem, we get to the cove watch the firework display and start to head back. We get about half the way back in total darkness with 30-40 foot yachts and speedboats going 50 mph past us and then it happens.... we run completely out of gas! well everyone starts freaking out, we are in a small boat getting tossed around by all the wake and chop of everyone else's boat so everyone starts yelling and screaming to get someone's attention to no avail, I suddenly remember I stuck this whistle in my pocket before we took off and grab it and start blowing, it only took 2-3 blasts before a boat pulled up to help, one of the guys said "whoever thought to bring a whistle did a good job cause that's the only reason we heard you and turned around" well they towed us to the gas station and all was good but had it not been for this whistle it could have turned out much different, bottom line I'm glad I had it and so were all the skeptics of being prepared!

Loud, cheap, but...
I admit it, the Storm is very, very loud. It's also a fantastic bargain. These two things, alone, make it a solid purchase as an safety whistle. However, I don't really think it works for backpacking. It's size is too large for lanyard-carry, if you already are carrying a compass/neck knife/etc. The biggest issue I have, though, is that it takes a lot of air to get this thing going. If you're injured in any capacity that makes breathing difficult, a whistle like this becomes pretty useless.

GET THIS ONE FOR SAFETY
I tried a bunch of them and... the STORM is the best. FOR SAFETY GET THIS ONE (the storm) ... for sports or similar you can get the FOX40 ...those were the two best. I know there is a smaller Version but this is louder. The manufacturer says this one is the loudest of the two ... yes it's bigger but still not huge. BTW I read a review of a person that says it's not loud enough and I can only think there is something wrong with the one she received... it's soooo loud without much effort... you have to literally cover your ears when you use it... for real.

Whistle blower.
I've owned and carried STORM whistles for many years. Though they are fairly robust in size, they are a quality piece of kit that you can easily tuck into a day pack, pants pocket or purse. This product is cheap insurance should you trip and fall walking a wooded trail or, with winter coming on, a slippery sidewalk. (Older individuals or anyone with a medical condition would find this product beneficial for summoning help in many emergency situations).YES, as many reviewers have stated, this is a VERY loud whistle. So much so that I ALWAYS try to use it responsibly around pets. Unless a situation arises, I rarely use this product around my home. I see no need alerting the neighbors to an emergency situation that doesn't exist. This really is a good, budget friendly product that can make a real difference summoning help in a wilderness setting or getting the attention of police officers on scary urban streets.

SOS or personal security
As a safety device this excels because this is the loudest whistle I've had the pleasure of having to need. I lived the Navy life for a while and used what was necessary to signal distress. Under nearly any condition it is effortlessly LOUD!!!! You could be so tired from your trek or preferably not, injury. You could think you can't go on, this whistle will send out at the least breath a shrill tone that can be heard for a very long distance in any terrain. Keep in mind the background noise and terrain obstructions to judge your level of exertion to alert anyone; the more you put in, the louder it will be. Remember your S.O.S. signal and your trail makings for distress. If you're thinking of this whistle for personal security; In the ear of anyone close without ear protection, it will be VERY uncomfortable to say the least.

This is very loud for calling for help.
I highly recommend this whistle. it may have saved my life. We were diving and had to come back up. The dive boat was no where to be seen. we floated in 5 to 6 foot swells for about half an hour until anther boat came close enough that they heard the whistle and picked us up. They did not see us or our dive sausages, but heard the whistle. I give it 5 stars. It is very loud. I will not be without it ever while diving.

LOUD! When you need it.
I own one and got this for a family member. It certainly performs its function and performs it well. You can hear it underwater if you have a serious lungful of air. It is reasonably robust. The one I have personally, is on a keychain and gets abused and it is still in good working order. It doesn't use a pea that might get lost. Now for some common sense points I need to make. 1) With the exception of an emergency, don't blow it unless you have good hearing protection, it will cause ringing in the ears.2) Don't blow it indoors. Like in point 1, emergency use is one thing, but this whistle is not a toy. It's as loud as a jet engine and in an enclose space, it's even louder.3) It's a good idea to have it on a lanyard. The brighter, the better. International orange is good. If you carry it in your pocket, you want to know you have your hands on it. Same if you carry a purse or messenger case. With all that being said, it's a good investment in your safety. Pick up a few so you are never without.

It is loud
and it works when it is full of water. Very slightly negatively buoyant, so tie it on or don't let go in the water!

Seems to be a great whistle, really loud
Seems to be a great whistle, really loud. As it is winter and weather is really bad, I haven't had a chance yet to test it while sea kayaking, but I don't doubt it will work nicely. I've been really surprised to see that the whistle arrived all the way from Japan, and rather quickly too.

When you need a whistle, it better work.
If I ever do need to use a whistle in an emergency, I want the loudest one possible. It also needs to work in harsh conditions such as being wet. I trust this whistle to work when I need it. It is a little on the large side, but boy is it loud.
