Amazing book
I'm in recovery myself, so I find it inspiring to read things like this. The things that Chuck went through were horrific, but the outcome is so amazing. I would definitely recommend this book.

It's all in the title!
A very personal, compelling expose of the Hollywood rock 'n roll scene of the 60's and 70's, how easy it is to get "sucked in" and how hard it is to climb out! But then the Three Dog Nightmare becomes the personal nightmare of Chuck Negron. His willingness and ability to expose his own personal degradations and shame over his heroin addicted behavior makes the book more than a condemnation of the drug culture. The reader gets insight into the physical addiction of heroin and the all-consuming need to "score". We begin to understand that heroin addiction is not about "feeling good", it's about "not feeling bad". We also understand that it's not a simple matter of just wanting to get off the drugs, but a soul searching, bottom of the dung heap decision that requires faith, work and an openness to the possibility of miracles. A must for Three Dog Night fans, rock 'n' rollers, addicts and the people who live with them and work with them, and maybe Robert Downey, Jr. Congratulations Chuck....for a wonderful book, the willingness to call it the way you saw it, and on turning your life around!

Inexorable
I'm a bit baffled at how some readers took this reading. I'm also amazed at the price of this book. I recently found out the reason for its expense is due to it being a collector's item.Inexorable? Yeah, I couldn't put the book down. I would say most of this book is extremely depressing. It seemed like trouble was waiting for this guy at every corner he turned. I didn't get any of the finger pointing other readers were claiming he did. He took the blame for his drug use/abuse. I think the real egos in this band were the three singers. There were a lot of pressures on this band, especially after the record company started realising that this group was a gold record grinding machine. This is one of the best reads I've had in a long time. I have to really wonder how much of what was written in this book was actually remembered by Chuck after his drug use? There seemed to be a little too much detail that raised suspicion with me.

Compelling/ fascinating/ devastating events/ guy
This is one of the most incredibly appealing talents ever to arise in rock n rollMultiple extreme successes and failures . Similarly to life & career of David Crosby, bothre amazing music skills & appeal; as well as eventual depths of un solvable heavy duty drug addictions....leave anyone wondering how either of these amazingly skilled musicians/ performers still has a beating heart , in operations , after countless collapses

A Meaningful, Uplifting Reading
Three Dog Nightmare is a wonderfully written biography about the road back to the world of the living. Chuck Negron begins his first chapter with the words "I should be dead". Truly, it's a miracle that he isn't. Not only is this an inspirational story of recovery, but it is of historical significance as it reveals both the glorious and the dark sides of Rock and Roll in the '60's: the agents, management, other band members, other recording artists, others who struggled ... others who did not survive. It's a story of how addiction destroys the self and those around the addict. It's a story of those who had to let go of Chuck Negron, to turn away for their own good, and those who (contrary to what most co-dependency experts would recommend) kept taking him back, praying for the "light to come on" for their loved one. And in the end, it was Chuck himself who had to ask for the "light". He asked and the strength was given to him. It is a meaningful, uplifting reading for anyone.

A VIRTUAL AWAKENING.....A MUST FOR FANS
This is an incredible story equalled by few similar novels...if you are a fan you MUST read this book. Chuck went from the height of worldwide fame and success, to the depths of delusion, despair and almost death. From TDN's beginnings through the evolution of groupies, drugs abuse, drug dealers attempts at murder, self abuse....it is a compelling, and often times a disturbing story. For TDN fans, the information offered about the TDN's songs, concerts and the rock and roll industry in the 70's is enough to keep one thoroughly immersed. Even if you are not a TDN fan, the portrayal of the "psychology" (so to speak) of a herion addict is sickening, sad, captivating and an awakening in and of itself. Read this book! p.s. when you read it, you will also realize that there can be no doubt that Chuck Negron was the essence of TDN.

Entertaining and inspirational
I was a huge Three Dog Night fan as a pre-teen, and Chuck Negron was always my favorite. His story of addiction is a gritty, unflinching and harrowing account, but his return to the stage and studio has been a triumph. I've seen him perform live in the Happy Together Tour for the past several years, and just hearing his voice again - now that I've read the whole story - brings a bigger smile to my face than ever.

Three Dog Night from the inside of fame
This is a very candid biography of Chuck Negron from Three Dog Night. It doesn't appear to change facts to make him look better in retrospect. He freely admits to his complete slavery to drugs for decades. It is a story of redemption and Chuck owns his demons, drugs and emotional. My only complaint is that the book features many typos and errors that should have been caught by proofreaders before publishing. I would still recommend the book to fans of Three Dog Night especially since it really shows many behind the scenes views of the band as well as managers and record label representatives.

Three Stoned Dogs
The book started off nicely as a successful rock and roll story and then slid into a story about drugs, addiction, and a great deal of grief. There were a whole bunch of bands and musicians from that era that I didn't like because I always thought they were zonked. This book confirms that. This book would be an ideal case study for psychologists who study and research addictions with drugs. Not an ideal book in a music library but has a place.
