A translation giving a modern voice to an ancient one
Whilst retaining the spirituality and sensitivity of Rumi, Farrukh Dhondy has succeeded in adding a sprinkling of modern worldly wit to the voice of the past. In this translation, Dhondy has imbued Rumi’s work - so rooted in his own time and personal experience whilst exploring the timeless power of transcendent love - with a more modern ‘knowing’ in its phrasing. In my opinion, Dhondy has made a worthy addition to centuries of translations of the Master.

A Fresh and Enlightening Take on Rumi’s Timeless Wisdom
I recently picked up "Rumi - A New Translation" by Farrukh Dhondy, published by Harper Collins India, and I must say, it was a refreshing dive into the mystical poetry of Rumi. What drew me to this edition was the promise of a new translation that captures the essence of Rumi’s spiritual and poetic brilliance in a contemporary style, and it didn’t disappoint.Farrukh Dhondy has done an exceptional job of making Rumi’s complex and profound verses accessible without diluting their mysticism and depth. The translation flows beautifully, maintaining the lyrical quality that Rumi is renowned for. Each poem felt like a journey into the soul, with Dhondy guiding the reader through Rumi’s profound insights on love, life, and the universe. What sets this book apart from other translations is Dhondy’s ability to preserve the emotional intensity of the original texts while making them relatable to a modern audience. The annotations and context provided for each poem enhance the reading experience, offering deeper understanding and appreciation. In comparison to other works, this translation stands out for its clarity and readability. Whether you're a long-time admirer of Rumi or new to his works, this book is a treasure trove of wisdom that speaks directly to the heart.Overall, "Rumi - A New Translation" is not just a book but an experience. I highly recommend it to anyone seeking solace and inspiration in poetry. It’s a profound reminder of the enduring power of Rumi’s words across centuries. A solid 5 stars for this enlightening read!

Rumi - a poet for the ages
Farrukh Dhondy ends his story of the renowned Rumi in his last two paragraphs: “I confess that I am neither a Sufi nor a poet and while working at these transliterations of Rumi, have used the texts of Nicholson and Arberry, the assistance and translating skills of friends who read Persian, and occasionally, the Urdu translations of Rumi by several scholars and commentators. “The liberty I have taken in trying to combine the intent of the original with an attempt at lyrical felicity, are entirely mine and none other should beg forgiveness for them.” As you might guess, I was surprised to read the above, having thought that the subtitle ‘A New Translation’ implied an author fluent in the language of Rumi. Then I had to laugh at this assumption I had made. Would I have read this book had I known the author didn’t read Persian? I think I would still have read it. I’m glad I did. For Rumi’s words are often spiritually stimulating and often have humor or satire as well as beauty. I rate this book at four stars, for I wanted more than merely 153 poems by Rumi.

Completely fails to deliver on promise to de-westernize Rumi
The author laments that Rumi translations don’t understand the religious context in which he wrote and promises to correct this. He also promises to retain the lyricism and poetic form. And he completely fails to deliver any of that. The poems vary from, at best. being pretty much exactly equal to other translations I’ve read to, at worst, doggerel without the promised contextualization. I am very disappointed in this book and am unlikely to buy anything by this author again.

Experience the spiritual magic
Rumi weaved magic with his words. His verses contain so many themes and each of them have a charm of its own. Love, God, sadness, existence and identity are some of the themes which reoccur in his work. The kind of spirituality and positivity which echoes from his words is simply awe inspiring. I cannot praise the genius of Rumi enough and I must also say that the efforts of the translator Farrukh Dhondy are commendable.🌟🌹Why you should read this book🌹-Firstly, the language is mesmerising. When I read this book, the experience felt equal to meditation.-The verses are filled with wisdom and contain the emotions which has the power to touch one's heart.-Rumi's works have a universal appeal. No matter where you live or what you do, you'll be able to relate with them.

An Honest review
Rumi needs no introduction. Being a sufi poems lover, I always enjoy reading Rumi's verses but it was the first time when my friend suggested to read this translation of Rumi's verses in English by Farrukh Dhondy. While reading this book I was able to feel the depth of words which were translated in the same way as I would have felt reading Rumi originally. Although at some places language has also become barrier, for the writer in not able to deliver the specific meaning of some verses. As every language has it's own originality and uniqueness, we can't expect the specifically same meaning and feeling in other language. For example- In chapter RENEWAL FROM THE FALL, in last stanza it seemed quite difficult to predict writer's real emotions. Also what I personally liked in the book was also how beautifully writer has expressed the true meaning of Islam without hurting the sentiments of anyone. My personal favourite chapters were POURING RAIN, TO EACH IS GIVEN & THROUGH A GLASS. So if you don't have time to read whole book right now you can atleast read these chapters, they are no less than a gem. Harper Collins once again proved their publishing skills by making the book not just look beautiful but also make each & every page of the book readable in an effective manner. I would review the book as a one time must read for everyone and lifetime read to all the people fond of sufism and Rumi's verses. Farukkh Dhondy's work is undoubtedly appreciable.
