Don’t bother!
Had to read for a book club! I loathed it! It missed the mark on grieving and I couldn’t idrntify with any of the characters

Japanese, zany, layered, delightful
I picked up a copy of this book at a library sale, intrigued by the simple title and image, the minimalist, naive feel. The author is Japanese and this is a translation from Japanese, so I don't think I fully absorbed the many nuances and meanings in this tender, zany, both straightforward and layered work about a girl who's alone in the world and the unusual family that adopts her. I got a taste into the Japanese sensibility of one writer, and this is enough for me.I recommend this book for adventurous readers, or readers of, for example, the disarmingly simple House on Mango Street, readers who like to explore difference.
