Good
It's a good enough DVD print. It ain't blu-ray so you can't expect 4k. Does what it does.

Love the movie. Hate this MVD release.
To start, I loved this movie growing up in the 80's and even now as an adult. 5 stars for the movie itself. This MVD release however is terrible! It touts a "New 2k transfer" from the Library of Congress 35mm film print. Well that's the problem. It doesn't matter how high the definition of the scan is if the source is garbage! This is a well used print! Complete with missing frames from countless reel changes and the like. This version has a run time of 1:43:10, whereas my old Dvd has a runtime of 1:44:25. Subtracting studio logo screen time from the old Dvd compared to this one, there is a loss of 55 seconds of material, and about six lines of dialogue missing from the MVD version. And to top it off, it appears as if they did little to no post processing of the scan. I don't mind the look and feel, or sound, of old film. I expect film grain and the occasional artifact, on older movies in particular, scanned to digital. But I do mind the artifacts on the right side of the screen visible throughout the movie and the constant streaks and whatnot from an old print. It would be fine, and expected if I were watching from an old film projector (which is the exact sensation you get watching this release), but a Blu Ray!? The color temperature is better that the old Dvd but, maybe slightly under saturated(?). The whole film is...soft. So if you don't like film grain that isn't an issue but, the clarity suffers. I could only imagine how bad this would have looked if it weren't so soft. It's also rather dark compared to the old Dvd. Which, I'll admit, was overexposed in some scenes. I am including screen shots of an old Dvd rip of mine compared to the new MVD Blu Ray to demonstrate the last three points.I wish the dog didn't chew up my old Dvd copy of this movie. (Thankfully, I ripped a digital copy for my home server before that happened!) Because this MVD Rewind version is not worth it's boutique label price! The included Dvd in this set is from the same substandard scan as the Blu Ray, so you can't even fall back on that. And all streaming versions of this movie out right now, that I bothered to check, are this MVD version. So they have saturated the market with this substandard release. In my opinion, you should keep an eye out at thrift stores and the like for an old Dvd copy, that's what I'm going to be doing, and avoid the MVD Rewind version.

Cinematic Treasure - don't miss it!
First off, I love this movies. It's a tear jerker that leaves you feeling good anyway. The transfer is not good. There are scenes that are clipped - I don't mean cut out, I mean a few seconds might be missing. It'll come in half way through a sentence and it is really noticeable. Anyway it kind of takes away from the movie.I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS MOVIE ANYWAY. This is one of the cutest movies of all time. It deals with themes of compassion, judgement and greed.Savannah is ignored by her parents and runs away. She unknowingly hides in a car that was stolen by two escaped convicts. They first try to figure out how to get rid of her but the little girl wins them over. When a reward is issued for Savannah's return, Alvie and Bootsie determine to collect. Which will win in this contest between compassion and justice?

I liked that I was able to find this old movie for my great grandchildren. This is a very loving movie with wonderful actors and messages.

You made our Christmas special!
Thank you so much! This is my Daddy’s favorite movie . They have it on vhs but not on DVD. We did not think we would ever be able to find it again. He has dementia and this Christmas has been sad since none of the family could come here. You made our sad little Christmas amazing! Thank you!

A whole new side to Mark Miller, if you retain fond memories of Mark Miller
Back in the 1960s there was a likeable actor named Mark Miller, mostly known for playing the husband in two sit-coms, as well as Gene Barry's in-house lawyer in The Name of the Game. He never made much of a splash but I always liked him. There was a solidity about him. Around 1980 he wrote a couple of movies (think Billy Bob Thornton's Sling Blade years later) with parts for himself showed a wider range. This is one of them. It isn't really very good. It does have Michael Parks being watchable as always and Peter Graves being Peter Graves, and Chris Robinson channeling Rock Hudson at his most boringly stuffy. It also has Donovan Scott who sounds uncannily like Modern Family's Eric Stonestreet. Oh, and it has an adorable little girl named Bridgette Anderson as Savannah, a politician's six-year-old daughter who runs away from home only to stowaway in a car driven by escaped cons Miller and Scott. That's the set-up. It's occasionally funny, occasionally heartwarming, flirts with becoming violent, but it's undercut by its low budget and director Pierre De Moro's weird choices of when to shoot long and when to shoot close up. What it mostly has going for it, if you retain fond memories of Guestward Ho or Please Don't Eat the Daisies or any number of 60s guest shots, is usually smooth, affable Mark Miller as the irascible, hard-bitten, hard-luck Alvie. The ending is actually pretty decent.

So ist bei amazon.com zu lesen:Brand-New 2K High-Definition Transfer from 35mm Original Release Film Print Provided by the Library of CongressHigh Definition Blu-ray (1080p) and Standard Definition DVD presentations of the main feature in 1.78:1 aspect ratioOriginal Mono Audio (Uncompressed PCM on the Blu-ray)''The Making of Savannah Smiles'' brand new documentary about the making of this classic comedy featuring writer / producer Mark Miller, star Donovan Scott, Teresa Andersen (mother of Bridgette Andersen) and composer Ken Sutherland (HD)''Memories of Bridgette Andersen'' featuring all-new interviews with Teresa Andersen (Bridgette s mom) along with writer / producer Mark Miller and actor Donovan Scott (HD)''The Songs and Music of Savannah Smiles'' featuring brand new interview with composer Ken Sutherland (HD)Original Theatrical Trailer (SD)Collectible Mini- PosterWarum man dieses Bonusmaterial nicht auch hierzulande auf die DVD gepresst hat mit Untertiteln (wie es eh sehr oft gemacht wird), kann ich leider nicht nachvollziehen. Wie immer ist es natürlich auch schade, das es keine Blu-ray Veröffentlichung gibt, obwohl das Master ja offensichtlich vorhanden ist.
