Product Description 4/4 stars. Vintage rock 'n' roll, barroom balladry and soulful Southern rock are delivered with equal aplomb, and a frisky update of 'Long Song Comin' ' breathes new life into that 1974 track. But it's the deep archival stuff that will most entice the diehards. 'Gets Ya Pumpin' ' is a grinding, 'Seven'-era number with Seger's electric young voice at its peak. The melodic midtempo songs 'Wildfire' and 'Days When The Rain Would Com' hail from the 'Like A Rock' period, and they hold their own against the best of Seger's majestic Midwest rock. --Detroit Free Press Review Several early-Seventies nuggets - including the Chuck Berry-style blazer 'Get Out Of Denver,' Seger's burnt-road-dog growl in the Allman Brothers cover 'Midnight Rider' and the brassed up locomotion of 'Long Song Comin' ' (with new overdubs) highlight Seger's funky-church and Detroit-muscle charge... --Rolling Stone, from David Fricke's: Fricke's Picks**** out of four stars Vintage rock 'n' roll, barroom balladry and soulful Southern rock are delivered with equal aplomb, and a frisky update of 'Long Song Comin' ' breathes new life into that 1974 track. It Get's Ya Pumpin'
After finally seeing Bob Seger in summer of 2015 I was completely blown away by his incredible talent as a song writer and a performer. Since then I've collected every release he has and have scoured You Tube to record all the hard to get and unreleased material I could find. From looking at the track list and considering all the incredible material from his early career, at first it seemed like a not so special collection for the debut CD of what will hopefully be a series of releases. But after listening to and reading up on this compilation of songs it turns out to be a refreshing and unique session with Seger. With his gritty and soulful cover of Midnight Rider for the first time on CD, the incredible cover of If I Were A Carpenter that blows my mind every time I listen, with The Motor City Horns adding arrangements to Get's Ya Pumpin' (can't get enough of this one) and a new recording of Long Song Comin', with all songs remastered or remixed, and with the almost title track Wildfire (love this song) you'll know this is another release giving us Seger at his best.

Like finding money in your pocket that you forgot about!
I accidently came upon this album while looking on Amazon for another product. I thought "what the heck, I like Seger how can I lose for a $5.00 investment" This is a great album - with most songs I have never heard before. UMC and Get out of Denver are classics if anybody has heard one of the best live album's ever "Live Bullet". Wildfire has a similar feel to "Fire Inside" with great piano and lyrics. "Long Song Coming" tells it like it is. How many times do you feel like getting up when you are about to politicians or other insincere mavens start to lecture in patronizing tone. Good Rock & Roll speaks to your soul - which most of these songs do. I don't understand why the songs are not getting air play on classic rock stations?? Best $5 I've spent in a long while.

An Almost Random Bob Seger Compilation For Completists
"Early Seger Vol. 1" is a strange compilation of material, some of it quite rare, from Michigan's hard charging and soulful favorite son, Bob Seger. I recommend this disc without reservation, but with two caveats: the disc is short and could have easily been fleshed out with other Seger obscurities; second, the disc's title really isn't accurate, as The Bob Seger System or The Last Heard aren't represented. This is a triviality to all but die-hard Seger fans, but those are the very people who are likely to buy this CD. Having said all that, I really liked the CD, and appreciated the insert photographs.Although the well-known "Get Out of Denver" is my favorite track on the CD, the real notable things here are the rarities on the CD including some very interesting material choices. Bob's take on Gregg Allman's "Midnight Rider" is very distinctive; even though it's a widely covered song, Seger really puts his personal touch on it here, but while distinctive I will always think of it as an Allman Brothers piece. Contrasted to that is Seger's take on another widely-covered staple, "If I Were A Carpenter," which has been covered by everyone from Robert Plant (an excellent rendition) to Leonard Nimoy (not so much.) I am not a huge fan of the song itself, but really enjoy the treatment Seger gave it.The CD also delivers plenty of Seger's distinctive hard-driving rock, with entries such as "U.M.C." and the unreleased gem "Gets Ya Pumpin.'" Of course "Get Out of Denver" can't be beat in this category, and the superior "Long Song Comin'" is another Seger rocker that could have been a classic. In short, this is an interesting release for Seger fans, but may not be the best introduction for casual listeners. Hopefully one day more classic Seger that's been moldering in the vault will see the light of day: a box set would be most welcome.

As good as it gets
I have been a Seger fan for over 30 years and I can say this about this album, Seger never sounded better. Its hard to believe that this has been around so long I hadn't discovered it before. The sound is classic Seger, but with an energy and soul that can only come from someone who has lived his songs. Some of the cuts are around on other albums and some I have only heard here. "Days when the rain would come" alone is worth the price of this CD.

Early Seger Vol. 1
This CD is a must have CD for anyone who likes Bob Seger such as myself. I just resently added this CD to my Bob Seger Collection an alsome CD. This Cd has songs that he recorded but was never released or added to any of his other CD's. A great CD and a must have for anyone who is interested in or already has a Bob Seger CD collection going.

Great Seger - but missing the best
Fantastic CD with one caveat....Seger's gritty, soulful early albums are actually grossly underrepresented. Nothing at all from the amazing Mongrel CD or Ramblin Gamblin Man and just the tamest from Smokin 'O.P.'s and Back in 72. Seger is great no matter what he does, but he really needs to stop being ashamed of the finest work he ever did!

NOT ALL EARLY SEGER
This could have been a longer cd with more selections since at 10 tracks it is far too short. Also of note is that not all the selections are from Bob Seger's early career. You have several cuts that stem from the mid eighties when Bob Seger was well established as a mega star. On a more positive note, you do get selections from the early seventies that show a true talent emerging.John Walsh

bob seger has always been one of my favourite artists, since catching him live
bob seger has always been one of my favourite artists, since catching him live, on a rare uk visit many years ago, Manchester palace 1978 I think it was, this early years set comes with some great old photos in the booklet. a version of if I was a carpenter, shows his versatility, bob has covered rock, blues, soul, even country in his music, still going strong today on a us tour and a new album, ride out, he is a true legend, and this early history is well worth a listen too.

「Someday,we''ll be number one Somday」

Seger delivers early greats
Bob Seger stands alongside Springsteen and Mellencamp in his lyrical storytelling and use of Americana in his songs he is without doubt one of the most consistent purveyors of quality music to ever come out of the USA. This cd highlights how good he actually is as this early collection stands alongside any of his later works. A must for ny fan of this style of music.
