This set is ridiculous
This set is ridiculous. Almost every cut from the Classics Series plus great sound. No liner notes is the only issue. However, the previous review provided this information in great detail. Snatch this one up.

A Splendid Anthology
As is usual with Membran issues, there are no discographical details included with this box but these can easily be traced as they are readily available on the web. To summarise briefly, this ten disc anthology includes examples of Bechet's recordings with Noble Sissle, and those for RCA Victor, Blue Note, HRS, French Vogue, and various other labels. The main omissions are the King Jazz sessions, those with Jelly Roll Morton and Louis Armstrong, and the 1923-5 Okeh's with Clarence Williams. However, for all but completists, this is certainly the finest anthology of Bechet's recordings currently available. At its heart are his major American studio recordings from the 1930's and 1940's - a period at which he was playing at his absolute peak. These tracks are some of the classics of traditional/mainstream jazz and have never lost their freshness. Bechet's final French years are represented by a handful of concert recordings with local 'trad' bands. These are enjoyable, but finally inessential, performances.Sidney Bechet was not only, with Louis Armstrong, one of the earliest of significant jazz soloists but also one of the very finest of any period. He was never a great ensemble player. His powerful soprano sax and clarinet nearly always take the lead and his solos are consistently breathtaking. He had an instantaly recognisable sound which was often copied but never equalled. His best recordings - most of which are collected here - are an essential part of any jazz collection. The remastering has been very well done and the set as a whole can be recommended without rerservation.

bargain Bechet
For the price, this purchase could hardly be bettered. It is by no means a comprehensive coverage of the Bechet oeuvre, but offers a fair sampling of his work across the years. Negatives: there is no discography, so you have to search elsewhere for the personnel - not that easy when no dates are given; some classic tracks are missing, notably 2.19 Blues and Coal Cart Blues from the incomparable 1940 session with Louis Armstrong; and some tracks seem to be alternative takes - the versions of Just One Of Those Things and Love For Sale from 1947 are inferior to the ones put out elsewhere. On the positive side, there are tracks here which show a lesser known side of Bechet: the Caribbean numbers, for example. Bechet rarely fails to grab the attention, whatever he does, and to get hold of ten discs of classic and not-quite-so classic Bechet for less than a tenner is indisputably a bargain. This won't supply all the Bechet a body could desire, but will provide a fair-sized chunk of it.
