How to Weave Hawaiian Coconut Palm Fronds Paperback – September 1, 2006

Pretty good but missing some simple fundamentals but there’s enough info to figure things out I guess. Will just end up taking a bit longer.

I live in Hawaii and have been weaving for 10 years. This was a game changer for me. Once you make hats and bowls consistently from this book, you will have enough knowledge to modify and make things with your own style. Without this book I could have figured things out, but it was an amazing step forward. I have made over 50 hats and countless bowls and hanging baskets.. Great primer to get started.With the hat, you will figure out other ways quick to do different brims. I wish there was a more advanced book, but once you make some, you will figure out how to do your own version.My first hat took me like 5 hours, now I make em in 30 minutes.. Takes practice but don't give up.. All in the preparation and quality of the palm leaf you get.

More than I thought it possible to learn about weaving with coconut palm fronds. Ingenious. The key thing apparently is limbering up the fronds before you start to weave, so you aren't fighting stiffness when you need pliability. An obscure branch of knowledge, but you never know when you will need to know how to make a hat while on raft adrift in the South Pacific. But the coconut-frond rose was the best: my kid saw a street person making them and selling them for a dollar and bought one. I liked it and I wondered how they were made, and now I know.

Weave Palm Fronds has been my inspiration and how to book to advance my palm frond weaving. People see palm frond weaving as something you do on a beach. Everyone asks if I am making a hat. But quickly I learned to weave the smaller cabbage palm fronds into wall baskets, yard art and sculptural designs.I recommended this book to anyone who has an interest in plaiting fronds into a simple basket. Follow the fronds. The basket weaving is very forgiving and the palm fronds tend to 'tell' you what they want to become.

Very interesting book. Some minor errors in numbering of the leaves and pictures that have been reversed so be careful but I wrote my own corrections and was able to weave beautiful hats and baskets. Nice projects, varied and interesting.

Cool book it is colorful and fairly easy to follow. It has some cool projects. I'd say one of the better books for these types of projects. A great gift.

I spent sometime in Hawaii and loved the local crafts that find all around there. This book does a descent job of showing one how to create some of those crafts.
