I recommend this book especially for those who:-Want to start selling, installing and repairing e-kits on a professional basis, and-Want to go seriously into performance conversions for e-bike races and off-road use-Want to know more about how an electric hob motor is built and worksVery technical and comprehensive, it's not to be read in a couple hours. Somebody mechanically inclined who wants to convert a bicycle to electric without much adoo might want something shorter. Although it has been written mostly for the UK, there are links to websites and forums worldwide inside. All things considered it deserves 5 stars. Hopefully the author keeps updated and will come out with a revised edition as the e-bike technology changes. The Kindle-version (which I got) is well made and the pictures nicely visible.My advise is to download the sample (or use the "see what's inside" feature) and read carefully through the Table of Contents - nothing else. This will give an exact idea of what to expect from the book. The text of the sample (preliminaries, ubiquitous "green talk" and more ubiquitous legal advice*) won't give any idea about what this book is really about. It is much, much more than that!

Very good manual for anyone considering building an electric bike. Seems a bit dry at times but like I said Technical Manual. Minor thing, European writer, however most references are in pounds/kilo and English money/dollars. Just a minor thing.Book well written and well edited. Very informative. Will keep using it as a reference manual while building a bike.

First off, I'm new to bicycling and especially electric bicycles. So I'm very novice. I recently became convinced that electric bikes were the way to go for alternate transportation and I wanted to know more, so I picked up this book hoping for a thorough explanation of electric bikes and a start-to-finish guide on how to build one. This isn't that sort of book. In my opinion, one would need to be well versed in bikes, batteries, and electricity before picking up the book. I found myself glossing over the sections having to do with battery design and electrical components. The author is an engineer and I dare say the book is better suited for someone with that sort of mechanical aptitude. Perhaps a "Dummies Book of Electric Bicycles" would have been a better choice for me.For a person with little understanding of electrical concepts/components, or battery design, the book would be better if it laid out the basic concepts first, and then described how to build a basic electric bike step-by-step, slowly building on the basic concepts along the way, and describing in detail the components used and why. Then add the advanced topics at the end.Another sticking point for me was the quality of the images. Most are of poor quality and I often struggled to make out what was being described. The images either need to be in color, or be of higher quality - or both.I think this book could become a bible of electric bicycle building and troubleshooting - in time. The author certainly has the know-how to make it so, and I hope to see future editions that reach out to a wider audience. The subject is worth the effort.

This book is a must for anyone who is going to build an electric bike. He goes into detail on wiring, building battery packs, motor types, connectors, repairing controllers etc. I find it much more practical then "Electric Bicycles, A Guide to Design and Use" by William C. Morchin - which is more of a text book then a how to guide.Matthew Slinn's book is an How Too Guide.

I wanted a good book covering electric bikes before I would consider buying one. This book more than covers the basics. The author goes into great detail on all aspects. Different motors , Batteries and Controls ETC. This is an especially good book if you have a background in Electronics.

This was a good book for me to read. It helped clarify some topics and gave me a much better foundation for a class that I took.
