This is THE ultimate release for the Roy Orbison fan, a real killer of a set. 7 discs that cover the entire period from his first ever recording up until he left the Monument record company and joined MGM in 1965. There is nothing missing here at all. All the tracks have been re-mastered and all of the big hits are here. But those of you buying this set will no doubt more than likely be familiar with or already own the greatest hits and probably a lot more besides, but for the collector there are alternate takes, radio adverts, rare early live recordings. There is something for everybody on this set.So much to cover in one review, I cant discuss all the songs individually or I'll be here for days but, briefly I will summarise the set. Firstly you get the entire Sun recordings. Made during 1956-1958 these early recordings show that flair for song writing and singing that would become his trademark. Only OOBY DOOBY was a real hit during this time and Roy was very little known outside of his hometown. His voice had not developed fully and didnt have the power and semi-operatic quality that it later had. Many of the Sun recordings are demos, and so can not be judged against his later work, its not his best period but essential to own, never the less. Then came the RCA period, where Roy found himself at a bit of a loss trying to find his style and RCA seemingly not knowing how to market Roy at all, or produce him either. Salvation finally came with his most sucessful Monument period which spawned all the big hit records we know and love. The rest is history ...This is a must have for the Orbison fan. The thick booklet gives you tons of recording data and rare photos, its all here. Only critisism I have is the cover photo. Roys albums always had great covers they could have improved a little on that, but the material contained within more than makes up for that.BUY BUY BUY, its not cheap but Roy is worth every penny and more, well done to the people behind this release at Bear family. This set is another quiatly bear family release,i have most of the bear family releases in my collection and have to say this is one of there best sets.Here we have all of roy's early records from his start with the teen kings through to his work on sun records and his brief stay at rca and then his complete recordings on the monument label.this really is a must have set for any orbison fan.My only gripe with this set is maybe the last cd which is full of different takes of about 10 songs,about 4-5 versions of each gets a bit boring,i can't help but think it would have been better to have one less cd in the set or have a disc covering the first year of roy's mgm period,or maybe they could have included the singles roy made at monument when the label started up again in 77.Enyway this set is worth every penny ,so if you like orbison you should buy this.

Ein zugegeben nicht gerade preiswertes Vergnügen aber es lohnt sich , ein tolles Buch das man sich immer wieder anschauen kann. Dann die Aufnahmen , besonders die die immer wieder unterbrochen werden und er wieder neu beginnt. Es ist etwas besonderes aber !!! man muss schon R. O. mögen und seine Stimme lieben.

After Elvis, there was Roy Orbison! Leave it to Bear Family to do it right, i.e. release the complete recordings of Roy from the beginning of his recording career to 1965. All his early rockabilly recordings are here as well as his incredible string of hits for the Monument Label. Like all Bear Family box sets, the sound quality is pristine and absolutely amazing. The hard bound book is filled with details and photos of Roy you never knew or had seen before. Trust me, if you're a fan of Roy Orbison, this is the absolute best set you can find. It is pricey like all Bear Family box sets but worth every penny. Let's hope Bear Family is working on a second set that covers the rest of his recording career after 1965.

This is a great buy, especially if you love Roy Orbison, as I do. You will enjoy the cd's & the book. The bottom, it's about Roy Orbison, the greatest singer in the world!!
