Plays AVIs, mp3s, FLVs(!) well, but others not so good.
I so wanted to give this nice little box a better review, but I have some issues with it.First of all, I was pleasantly surprised that this device does play FLV files, but I did not test all my FLV youtube files on it. I bought the device to be able to play mkv movies since I never seem to be able to get them to play on my laptop well using VLC. It does not play MKVs very well for me. Most AVIs play, however. It would be cool if the designers of this device actually used a similar software and interface that VLC employs for computers. Also, when you complete a video, you can not get back to the same folder and there is a long delay when using USB devices to find files. It does not list files properly nor in alphabetical order as you would find when using a computer. The device will not shut completely down unless you unplug it, and will freeze when you turn it on again unless you have unplugged it.That said, I feel it's worth the $40 bucks I paid for it and probably not worth the trouble replacing at this point. I am looking for a player that is reliable for mkvs that I can use with my TV. Any suggestions are welcome.

Fiddly, but it works
*** It plays back almost all the videos I want and it doesn't cost much. ***I was planning to do an long test to see which file formats this really plays - never got around to it. Summing up, it plays MOST of the stuff you're able to snag on your computer. AVIs, MKVs, MP4s and so on. Handles softsubs in MKVs, external subs if they're in an SRT file with exactly the same name. It's pretty rough around the edges. Misspelled words in the menus. If you swap out a USB stick you'll almost certainly have to power off/on to get it recognized again. In fact, power cycling solves MANY problems you'll run into. Fortunately a power cycle only takes a few seconds. It's not going to handle the really hi-res stuff. In fact, although it's technically capable of playing 720p videos many of the 720ps you'll encounter are of a width too wide - I think 1024 or 1076 is the limit (the blurb on this page is wrong - it does not play 720x1360. I've never seen that size but I see many 720x1280s and those Do Not Work on this player. But that's ok. I'm using this on a 19" tv and 1080p is overkill. If you want the high-res stuff get the newer model NBOX V3.I could go on for dozens of paragraphs laying out annoying little quirks (don't like the remote). But, in the big picture, those are LITTLE quirks.*** It plays back almost all the videos I want and it doesn't cost much. ***---------Tip. If you have a batch of related files you want to play - like 20 episodes of a TV show - break them out into a few subdirectories. This sorts files with some byzantine scheme that I can't understand. Easier to find the next file if you don't have to look at too many in one place.

good deal for the price.
Won't play half of my mkv files...i have to take the time to convert them which is why i got this box in the first place. you can't switch between audio tracks either, would be much better if you could. good product for the price, knocked off two stars for the fact that it wont play half of my stuff, and the fact it can't switch audio's even thou the guy i bought it from kept insisting it would by pressing the button on the bottom of the remote...=]

Great Product with Superb Functionality and Surprising Control
The NBOX 2nd Generation lived up to my expectations. I was looking for a streamlined media player that could handle my media files and display them in an easy format. NBOX 2nd Gen. came through beautifully. I love it's ease of navigation and ability to move through directories to find and display what I want.(One Important Note)In order to keep your NBOX experience streamlined, keep your directories small. Say maybe 10 to 20 files or folders per directory. Reason being- is the longer the listing of files and folders, the longer it will take the NBOX to transition to your selection if it is indeed a long/large listing. Meaning it will feel like it's stalling/frozen when in actuality it is processing all the entries to be displayed in that selected directory. It is a great device. It did, however, have trouble playing large video files greater than the 720p output. You'll need to step up to the NBOX V3 Full HD 1080P. They would not play on the NBOX 2nd Generation. For me that is alright. I truly enjoy the product and highly recommend the device to anyone on a budget.I mainly use it for watching movies, pics and music. The music player btw is pretty slick. I actually prefer listening to music on this device's graphical interface than on Windows Media Player. You need to see it to believe it. It's pretty slick and eye pleasing.Great Product and for the price you can't beat it!Cheers :)P.S. This device works well on the five RCA input configuration (Red,Green,Blue,Red,White) as well as the old standard (3) RCA input configuration (Yellow,Red,White). No Coax or HDMI here. You'll need an external switcher to handle those facilities.Oh... Lastly. NBOX needs to provide a slideshow feature in their units. Clicking through each picture can be quite tedious. It would be nice if there was a slideshow function that would automatically cycle through the images and all media for that matter. That would be a Hoot!BTW - You can read Ebooks, too. I have yet to use this function, but it is an option on the menu screen.
