Wow.
I have received this book and have read through several sermons. So I’d like to give a review on this VERY PRECIOUS Christian master-work.Meister Eckhart was a man who was blessed with a VERY powerful, deep seated and spiritually-centered mind&intellect. That he has dedicated entirely to the pursuit of all things that are Eternal.(Remember the time when you were young and you looked into the night sky and tried to comprehend its depth, length and width and your mind was completely overwhelmed? Welcome to Meister Eckhart.)His worldview and frame work of understanding is entirely Christian and as a Christian you will find nothing amiss within his orthodoxy. What you will find, though, is a man with a grasp on some of the deepest and loftiest thoughts concerning the spiritual aspects of the Christian tradition. There may never have been a man of God, a saint, a servant and follower of Jesus Christ quite like Eckhart. If you are looking to be stretched as far as you are possibly able to be stretched on all things Eternal, then this book is priceless. Millions of dollars for a copy wouldn’t be nearly enough. God has given this man something very special. And it would do you good to get it if you want to be challenged on the deep things of God to the furthest degree that may be possible while you are still here on this earth. If I could rate this book out of 10 it would receive a score of:Infinite & Eternal out of 10Get it. But take your time with it. 1 paragraph will have you thinking into the deep things of God all week long. There really is nothing like it that I’ve come across in all of Christian theology, spirituality and contemplation.I highly recommend it and certainly look forward to meeting Eckhart out upon the Everlasting Shore.

Although he lived in the 1200s, Eckhart is a mystic for all time.

Astonishing essential Christian writing that is a staggeringly rich addition to any Christians library
For those wishing to practice Christianity, this is as essential as Saint Augustine's autobiography or St. Thomas Aquinas. This book which constitutes one half of the teachings and sermons given by Meister Eckhart are so deep and so forthcoming in their truthfulness as to be staggering. One should feel oneself lucky one can read one paragraph without feeling completely overwhelmed and as if one had eaten entire rich meal. For those lucky to have this book, it becomes a permanent place of pride Christian epic. I can think of no other single Christian writing that warrant such praise. This is a no-brainer and a no remorse purchase. the only problem might be trying to think you could read it all in a year, when it should take 2 decades. Astonishing.

The Best Source for Eckhart's Sermons
There are other excellent reviews of this book, so I'll keep this short. The lion's share of the book is the translation of all his Middle High German sermons, organized and labelled in such a way that you can find them regardless of which of the seven different methods for numbering that have been used over the years, about 450 pages. Ninety pages are devoted to five short treatises. The treatises deal primarily with the Medieval style of monastic discipline. There is no New Age rainbows and Celtic knots here. This volume is a bit pricy, but the introduction by Bernard McGinn, and expert on Eckhart and the medieval in general contributes much to the value of the book. For those to whom this is important, it is also very nicely designed, with a spffy dust jacket. For those who are new to Eckhart, you may be surprised at the briskness and brevity of the sermons. After spending a fair amount of time reading sermons by John Donne and Jonathan Edwards, I'm amazed at these little gems. But for all their brevity, they were often written for an audience of clerics and theology students. Therefore, the thought behind the text tends to be quite deep. There is remarkably little of what you might expect from a modern homily. Eckhart was primarily a university professor, so his sermons may come off sounding like lectures. But, Eckhart does currently rank among the top late medieval Christian scholars, a distinction which is relatively new. This is why out of his 10 volumes of Latin and German works, not much more than one volume is available in English.Highly recommended, especially when compared to other collections.

A Master of the presence of God
This is a major work for all those seeking the way through prayer and presence. We may call this 'mystical'. In truth it is reality. More of us need to find this and Master Eckhart is one of the best ways to receive guidance, until we too 'know' for ourselves. May our journey be blessed!

If you know some German I would recommend you stick to Quint's edition
Just a few more observations in addition to the previous reviews. The translation is decent, and the most complete to be found in English so far. The translator's footnotes are a mess (for example, Sermon 8 note 5 says to see Sermon 11 note 2, which refers you back to Sermon 8 note 5; or Sermon 15 note 1 says to see Sermon 13 note 4, but we have to guess whether this means 13a note 4 or 13b note 4, and neither seems remotely apposite; there's a lot of this monkey business in the footnotes). Most footnotes just say vague lazy things like "See Sermon 42" without any further specification; or "See Ephesians 1:4" without bothering to print the verse, so you have to go off and find it for yourself. If you know some German I would recommend you stick to Quint's edition. The current price for this volume on Amazon.co.uk is £80, which is daylight robbery for a perfect-bound reprinted 'hardback'.
