Islamic Designs (British Museum Pattern Books) Paperback – 15 Feb. 1988

This is really one of the best books for doing research into Islamic art and pattern and mathematical geometry which reflects the perfection of the Ultimate Maker, as it collects patterns from tiles, pottery and architecture and puts them all into this one jewel of a tome. As a teacher it is a gift to children who are either from this culture of Islam and are not knowlegeable enough about it, and it will give them a real pride in their own culture, or for children of other cultures who need to know about Islamic art as part of their fuller education, but above all it is such an enjoyable and genuine source of material for all ages; in simple black and white very clearly created.

Despite other, negative, reviews, I am delighted with this book. It presents the exquisite geometric and fluid organic patterns of traditional (and some relatively 'modern') images and calligraphy from across the Middle East. Some reflect South Asian influences e.g. swastika patterns; others could almost be Celtic. A beautiful resource.

Make sure you dont already have this book as the cover design has changed. I was really disappinted as i already have this book, I made the mistake of not checking author etc details. However saying that, the book itself is full of interesting designs and inspiration. I would have preferred to see colour designs too, all in the book are black and white.

Some really good patterns, but some explanation needed on how to actually create them through a technical drawing approach and methodology

This book is full of all the right design ideas to get you started on making that perfect design. The source book of distinction.

Not really what I expected. I was hoping for more complete designs and examples rather than the one off patterns represented Probably my fault for buying the wrong book!
