Yes you should be able to buy extenstion cord.

Q: My headphones just arrived. how do i get them to plug into my hp 840 laptop? they have a funky adapter on the end

I looked up your laptop model quickly, and i dont think it lacks the regular 3.5 mm audio jack. Headphone might have came with the wider audio jack attached to it, for musical usage (For ex: listening to an amplifier) . It looks something like this: https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/31lS818eTNL.jpg Tho it has some black cover, you just have to remove the attachment and see the regular audio jack. and plug it to the laptop. https://www.notebookcheck.net/fileadmin/_processed_/csm_rechts_b94f3d651c.jpg to the one on the very left.

Q: sound is only coming out on one side. any way to fix this without having to return and buy another one?

Sounds like one of the drivers are blown out not worth trying to fix just buy another pair we have them for $9.99 I believe

Q: Lost my adapter. What is the plug size?

3.5mm. If you want to plug it to a HiFi stareo receiver at home, buy a 3.5mm to 1/4-inch adapter like the one shown in the item picture
