This cutlass is a great representation of the tough and sometimes brutal life that pirates lead; battle ready with a thirst for a good fight. Did you know that cutlasses were favored by sailors due to their small size and ease of use? It’s true. Pirates also often stole these swords from Naval Personnel after raiding their ships. They were commonly used for cutting ropes, canvas and wood, and in battle for close quarter combat and boarding actions. Another advantage to the cutlass was its simplicity of use: It required less training than the rapier or small sword, and was more effective as a combat weapon than the full-sized sword. The blade you see here is made from EN45 carbon steel with a fuller to balance and lighten the blade. Speaking of the blade, it comes oiled to prolong to prolong its life. The blade has no edge so it is great for costumes or re-enactments. You can hone it to your own specifications. The guard is made in traditional cutlass style that looks like a leaf that curves up into the pommel. The handle is wooden and wrapped in Rexin. The pommel is peened with a full tang construction. The entire piece has a dark antique finish to simulate age and make it look like an authentic pirate replica. The scabbard is made from wood that has been also wrapped in rexin. A frog stud is provided on the steel locket of the chape. So whether you are pillaging or just need that special something to finish off a great costume this cutlass will do the trick.

This sword is absolutely wonderful! Although it took about a little over the time it took to ship it, I believe it was worth the wait. The pommel is indeed peened as it said and the blade unsharpened. I will say it is a oily son of a bitch when you open it, but as it said in the description, it is to prolong its life.Mine does have a little gap between the grip and the pommel, but it's only really noticeable if you look close. So no problem. The scabbard and grip are very well done, though I noticed a few nicks here and there, it does add to the aged affect so it's not a problem. But real winner here with this sword is that it sits in my frog nice and snug so it wont fall out, the frog button helping both with that and being a nice touch.Overall, definitely worth the money, but do remember that its not like the Hanwei hanger so its not battle ready. Though it is perfect for your typical budget pirate outfit!

incredible battle-ready cutlass
I was hesitant buying this because of the low price and lack of many reviews. Boy am I glad I did! I do own the famous Hanwei version of this and let me tell you, this sword is EVERY bit as sturdy and battle ready as that sword. Possibly more in some ways. I also owned the famous Magnoli "movie accurate" Jack Sparrow sword, and this sword is WAY better. Sure that one has the bare wood handle authentic to the movie....but the "high carbon" blade is terrible. It has zero spring to it and is NOT battle ready. But also, they don't claim it is. They just say it is high carbon, not battle ready. FYI.Anyway, I will admit, this one is a little rough around the edges, with the hilt not perfectly centered and a little rust on it here and there. But that all just adds to making this thing look ancient and very real, like it has seen a sea battle or two. It does come quite dull, but you can sharpen it if you choose. As I do with any supposedly real swords I get, I tested the flex of the blade. It is quite sturdy, and I was able to bend it quite a bit and have it still return to straight with no issue, a good sign or decent steel. So, if you are looking for a sword as perfectly made as the Hanwei, this is not the one for you. But if you like the general look of the Hanwei/Jack Sparrow sword, but can't find it, or don't want to spend the money, or you want one that is just as functional but more battle-made looking, then this sword is perfect. High carbon spring steel blade, full peened tang, solid hilt and handle construction; look no further for a better made, battle-ready, accurate Jack Sparrow sword!
