Fresh, new Folk
IF like me you have been bought up on old folk (Tom Paxton, Mady Prior, Dubliners etc...) Seth Lakeman is a new sound for new folk. Fresh, beautifully arranged songs with the help of Cara Dillon providing her usual haunting backing vocals (Check out Cara Dillon on amazon, another great addition to any Folk collection)You won't be able to not tap your feet to the up-lifting, sometimes heart wrenching lyrics, my favourite being the White hare. Seth was also nominated in 4 categories this year in the BBC2 Folk awards, winning best newcomer for his track the Colliers - true story of the Gresford Colliery disaster of 1934 when 266 miners lost their lives in an underground explosion.A foot tapping, enjoyable, soothing album, and a bright new star in modern folk!!!Check Seth out on myspace and You tube for some of his earlier work and recent gigs.

Instrumental parts could have been handled better
While I agree with the positive comments in the five star reviews, I found some frustration in the notation of the guitar and bouzouki parts. Even though some of the songs call for the use of a capo, the instrumental parts are notated in the same key as the melody. For example, the bouzouki part in "Childe the Hunter" is notated in D flat. The problem with that is that flat keys tend to be awkward for fretted instruments and no one would want to play a bouzouki in D flat: it would make much more sense to play and notate the part in C, with a comment about using a capo so that it will sound in D flat to match the melody. The tablature provides some help if you're playing a six string guitar, not so much if you're playing a tenor guitar, bouzouki, or other instrument such as Seth Lakeman might have used.
