Could not stop watching
I just received this DVD and was intending to watch it at a later date but the DVD smelled definitely of wood smoke. So I put it in just to make sure it worked. It worked just fine but I could not stop watching the DVD. Instead of watching two minutes, I watched the whole thing. I don't know that I could do even a sloppy job of what Peter Goodwin did even if I watched him do it again while I copied him (I did buy it as an instructional DVD) but it was fascinating to watch. He does give an overview of each step but it shows clearly that he is a master of great experience. Much of it is very quick, though there are a few moments of stills and some slow motion. You do see him do it all, in detail, but I think it might work just slightly better as a documentary than as a how to. This may be because, as the DVD mentions, that it is number five in a series. After seeing this I intend to get the other DVD's I can find on Amazon and hope that they may cover some of the basics in a manner more suited to a complete novice, like myself. Even if they don't though, if they are anything like this DVD, I can't see myself feeling cheated. Seeing a pile of old folios and bits of material turn into that leather bound book in such detail was simply beautiful.

Good intro but far from super detailed and music to drive you insane
While I think this book is a great introduction to binding a leather book, it lacks in some information that would be helpful at times. Just small tidbits, nothing major. The only thing that drove me insane when watching the $1.99 rental was the fact that they include this stupid harp music at random and it is REALLY annoying. It's one of those things where I'd rather hear dead silence than listen to the music and I'm a huge fan of music, just not what seems to be scales on harp, like "heavenly" music. Blah.

Very enjoyable
I bought this -- the leatherbound book dvd -- along with the atlas restoration dvd, and the accountant book series, and found them to be somewhat similar, but all very enjoyable. The leatherbound dvd, this one, is probably the most complete of the three I have mentioned -- the most complete, start-to-finish interest to a new bookbinder. The dvd doesn't explain how to make your own folios but that is easily learned off the net (it's just how many sections of paper you use) and folios are the least of your concerns when you make books.I loved this leatherbound book dvd. He has been making books for 60+ years and I was glad to see his thumb get as full of glues mine does when I make books by hand! He's a great guy with a very relaxed, unstresful teaching style. A very nice man, and as a professional bookbinder myself it was an honor to watch a master work and share the mysterious world of bookbinding in DVD format. All the best to you, Peter, and thank you very much for your series! I can't wait to own them all.

It was OK as an overview
This video was good as an overview, but there really wasn't much in the way of useful information. I was looking for more of an actual tutorial.Technically, the sound and video recording techniques were amateur at best.If you are like me and actually want to learn something, avoid this video. If you are just curious about the steps to bookbinding and don't mind home movies then this might be acceptable.

Helpful
The video was helpful as it allowed for a peak into a project and studio of an expert book binder. I was left with unanswered questions about technique, but that's okay. Those questions can be answered elsewhere.

Calling all beginner bookbinders
Wonderful video for the beginner (like me). Accomplished binders might get a different approach to some aspects. Mr. Goodwin's wit and charm leads the viewer through every step, from sewing on cords to gold tooling. Because of the scope of what is covered there are some details that are not fully developed. Don't forget, it's only about 1.5 hours not a two-week course! Beginners should buy this and watch it several times. I think experienced bookbinders could thoroughly enjoy this and get some tips, but would be better served by renting/viewing it online. Janette Heffernan does the solid video work and knows when to zoom in for a close-up. I enjoyed their funny banter. She might want to consider using a chest-mounted tripod for stability. Nice job overall!

The Leather Bound Book Video Bookbinding with Peter Goodwin
This video was informative. The movement of the camera while the video was being taped made me dizzy watching it.The movement continued through the lenght of the dvd. If the camera was on a tripod and just zoomed in and out a little it would of been much better. THE LEATHER BOUND BOOK DVD BOOKBINDING WITH PETER GOODWIN

Priceless record of bookbinding.
I am going to teach myself bookbinding and I had a lot of unanswered questions that I couldn't find answers to anywhere. This video answered most of the basic ones I had and it was very easy to follow. Its wonderful theres such a record out there. I plan on eventually collecting all the videos.
