Engineer’s scriber
The RAF uses these, and I have used them for 56 years, and they do what they say on the box while staying sharp. One will last a lifetime.Couple it with Dykem blue for best results.

A good well made scriber, steel rather than the flimsier aluminium variety
I liked the fact that it was the same well made type that I used in college 50 yrs ago. A good long tapered point means that a centre point will show up 2 - 3mm deep in timber, if enough force is applied, I think that the point could be damaged with too much force being applied for, say - making point markings in metal however, but for light to medium work, say scribing a line for cutting out in mild steel, alumi.nium, brass or copper sheet it will be fine. For centre punching in harder materials, I would not recommend any bending forces. A stronger device such as a spring loaded automatic centre punch I would suggest for harder materials. This is a good workmanlike tool that should with care last a lifetime. It has a good knurled centre section into which the points screw, I imagine that spare ends might be available from the manufacturers.I cannot think of any negatives.
