180gm HEAVYWEIGHT VINYL. Anathema formed in Liverpool in the summer of 1990 & grew to become a major force in the doom metal genre with their early works, before exploring more rock & progressive elements over time to great success. Harder, heavier and darker than what followed, Anathema's 1993 debut, 'Serenades', received glowing reviews and, even at this stage, suggested that this was a band who stood apart from their competitors. Original vocalist Darren White said at the time, "Anathema is not just another heavy metal band but a presence and a power in every living spirit." They certainly didn't disappoint, as the album garnered universal acclaim. UK Metal Hammer made it their album of the month, and with the release of the video for Sweet Tears, it wasn't long before Headbanger's Ball took note, airing the video on a weekly basis. This culminated in a live interview and a Peaceville/Headbanger's Ball live spectacular at Nottingham's Rock City with Anathema's label mates My Dying Bride and At The Gates. Serenades managed to blend fragility with raging aggression to stunning effect and heralded the dawn of one of the best Metal bands in the world. Even at such an early stage in the band's career, it was obvious to all who listened just how special Anathema could be. Review: Anathema's debut displays signs of the diverse changes that followed - Not a bad album, a bit of a shock if your opener to Anathema was something like Judgement. In places you can hear some riffing and chord progressions you would later hear on one of their more gothic rock/metal albums. These songs aswell as songs like J'ai fait une promesse and Dreaming: The Romance show the band already starting to evolve. Then its time for The Silent Enigma Review: The First... - of 5 five-star albums. Alternative 4 is as far as I can go--they just went generic goth after that, as have Tiamat, Amorphis, and Paradise Lost (!). Only My Dying Bride have failed to succumb to this trap--Cheers to the True Goth/Death/Doom Metal!!!

Classic Doom/Death Metal
One of the classic British doom/death albums of the 90's, joined with the works of My Dying Bride and Paradise Lost. Really depressing and romantic sounding doom with dark vocals. Gets a bit whiny at times, but overall, pretty awesome.

A big, fat depression
I love depressing music, and this is about as down as it gets. This material is much heavier than Anathema's later, more acoustic-based work. Along with My Dying Bride and Paradise Lost, this band set the standard for 90s depression/doom metal. These songs rarely move at more than a crawl, and the huge, heaving riffs are like massive sobs. I rate this album as average, however, because it gets pretty boring sometimes. Repetition can be good for setting a mood, but here it just becomes slothful. The vocals are extreme deep growls, pretty much just thrown on top of the music. Very slow, no rhythm. Basically, this type of vocals does nothing for me. I'd prefer clean singing, which Anathema eventually did adopt. However, if you're really down and want nothing more than to be pounded into a stupor, this is the album for you.

But it is a great listen if only to understand where doom and goth ...
This is ealry Doom metal. If you want death metal or Goth rock this isn't for you. It blends so much it is hard to tell what you are hearing. But it is a great listen if only to understand where doom and goth stared. Solid album though.

Defining Doom Metal
I gotta say that this is one of my favorite doom metal albums. Slow and boring? Not at all. This is doom metal, folks, not speed metal, not pop rock, or pink floyd inspired rock (like later Anathema). The first time I heard this many years ago, my knee-jerk reaction was that all songs sounded the same. But then again, I was coming from a Metallica background and didn't really understand what doom metal meant. Each song on this album has a core doom riff as its core, which has a number of different elements, which may appear choppy to most. The whole song plays with the riff, building on it and with each progression smoothing out the riff until the whole song sounds more 'smooth' for lack of a better word. Of course the two guitars on each song play against each other sometimes offsetting sometimes complementing. With each listen, you move beyond the superficial (some might call it the same boring riff), and dig deeper and discover different layers of the song. Give this a try, you'll see what I mean. And do not try and compare this with their subsequent releases - its totally different - though the sound is still there. Vocals are great with Darren White leading. They nicely complement the music. I believe this is the only album which he sang on. Defining Doom Metal.

Anathema at their earliest and finest. Do NOT expect later Anathema, as this is their quasi-doom metal days. If you want a good example, check out 'Sleepless' on you tube. If you enjoy contemporary doom metal you will LOVE this album. For me... FANTASTIC! Worth the cash in any sense of the word.
