Outstanding Cult Classic
Rutger Hauer - need I say more?If you like exploitation style grindhouse films, this should fit the bill, iirc it is the 2nd after Machete.

Fun and special movie
I remember seeing this in high school and loving it. Watched it again over a decade later and liked it even more. Arrived in perfect condition with a very cool case. Love it, thanks! Will continue to recommend to my friends.

Gory, Cheesy, Dark, and Phenomenal
I'm a big fan of cheesy B-rated movies (which might have came from my love of Mystery Science Theater 3000), and this movie completely nailed the vibe of an old grindhouse flick from the 80's that you would watch in a drive-in theater! The gore is ridiculous, the lines are cheesy, the humor is dark, and the story is minimal but entertaining.I won't go to much into the plot, mainly because you can read that in the item description, among other places, but it's about a bum played by Rutger Hauer (Blade Runner, The Hitcher, Ladyhawke) who wants to start a life and has just gotten off a train at a new city. He wants to buy a lawnmower and start his own business, but things get bad quick when he sees just how twisted the city really is. Long story short, he buys a shotgun with the little money he's saved and plans on cleaning out the city gutters.Go into this movie knowing little about the plot though, because there isn't much to it, and it's better to experience it on your own! While most movies would lose a few stars for having little story, but it works here. The director hit the nail on the head with making a grindhouse movie, and it's a hell of a lot of fun to watch it all play out. The music especially is phenomenal. Power Glove perfectly captures the 80's-style electronic music (they also did the Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon soundtrack!), while a few pieces of music (mainly in the intro) reminded me of the theme song from Cannibal Holocaust.Overall, this is one of my favorite movies out there, it's so much fun to watch and I highly recommend you check it out if you're a fan of ridiculously over-the-top movies like Machete, Death Proof, Planet Terror, etc.

You Know You Wanna Watch This!
Back in 2007 I was in Toronto and met some guys who screened Demons 2 one night. Before the film began they showed a collection of film trailers for Argento films, spaghetti westerns and such, and then the original HOBO trailer played. It was a wonderfully done trailer that rivaled the ones used in the Tarantino/Rodriguez Grindhouse film. The director was present in the theater but I didn't speak to him then(too bad), but I always remembered the trailer. I never thought it would actually become a feature film, let alone star Rutger Hauer. So here we are-Hobo With A Shotgun is a reality, and the exploitation world is the better for it. Basically it's about a hobo that comes into a crime ridden town and decides to go Bronson when he's seen(and experienced) enough. The town in the movie is super exaggerated in it's criminal activity-it's a friggin' warzone! Think of the gang ruled neighborhood in Death Wish 3 and that's how this entire town is! But then again, everything here is exaggerated. This movie is very cartoony and brings to mind images of Troma(in fact, a character in the film is wearing a Troma shirt in one scene). Rutger Hauer is the odd one out in that he's basically the "normal", non-cartoon character here. And that really makes it work. His downplaying against everyone else's over the top playing really helps give the movie that additional edge to bring it above being total silliness(along with the hot young lady who plays the prostitute. I forgot her name at the moment). We all love Hauer, you'd have to be some kind of communist not to. Though he's been in numerous B movies throughout the years, we've never seen him in something quite like this, something more tongue in cheek. Movies like Bleeders, Crossworlds and Turbulence 3-Heavy Metal were schlock, but schlock taking itself a bit more seriously. It's a nice change of pace for Hauer. The film has a decent amount of gore. Some say it surpasses Machete. I'm not sure if it does. Perhaps, but unlike Machete, the gore here is not CGI, which elevates it substantially. The second disc(if you're thinking of buying the 2 disc version) has a nice Making Of.. documentary, interviews with Hauer and director Eisener by Fangoria magazine, the alternate ending, and the original fake trailer(though this may be on disc one, I forgot). I haven't watched the film on "Shotgun Mode" yet, so I'm not sure on that one.All in all, a very good "grindhouse" style film here. Usually these modern throwback movies leave alot to be desired and make you wish you had used your time to watch an actual grindhouse movie instead of these weak imitations.Hobo With A Shotgun is one to be proud of the grindhouse throwback status. It earns it.

Hobo With a Message
I am usually very skeptical of films which set out - as a matter of course - to duplicate a genre. Hence, when I see a film that is obviously trying to be a circa 1970's style exploitation flick - I am a little dubious. In this case, I was rewarded for taking the risk. The film is clearly over-the-top when it comes to the violence/exploitation features of the film. There is a fair amount of gratuitous violence and staged killing (mostly execution style). Of course the logistics of the shotgun make very little sense logically, but this should not be of primary concern. The shotgun is really the modern equivalent of the 'enchanted sword' - a mystical tool allowing the hero figure to bring about justice. And, depending upon which heroes path you are on - this either ends well or ends badly. In truth, "Hobo with a Shotgun" has a less-than-hollywood ending which is just what the doctor ordered. This film clearly trivializes the issue of urban violence (but then so did the Jodie Foster snuff flick "The Brave One" which was just a remake of "Death Wish"). Americans, whether we want to admit it or not, desire 'heroes' or vigilantes to step in and bring an immediate solution to what is more often than not a symptom of a complex problem. Violence does not come from the vacuum, it usually comes from hopelessness - something else this film does well describing.

really creative use of violence
This movie has so many cool scenes where people get killed in the most over the top, imaginative ways. It had me talking about which was my favorite gorey death.
