What it is for and what it isn't for
As a physio, I recommend this support predominantly for people with osteoarthritis of the thumb joints (there are several here), and it works very well because it allows the top thumb joint to be moveable, whilst supporting the arthritic joint/s. What it is not for, is tendon problems like D'Quervains which needs the whole of the thumb including the end joint, and mid forearm splinting to stop the tendon from working - so it is not the splint that is at fault in the bad reviews but the inappropriate splint for the job (bit like you cant put a round peg in a square hole)

Just excellent
I bought 2 of these at the end of August, because I had just had a trapeziectomy (removal of trapezium bone from my wrist). I needed something to keep my thumb stable, with little movement, and because I did not want a plaster cast, I was offered what looked like a Blue Peter made plastic splint by the NHS! It was useless and tiny, and my hand felt exposed and vulnerable, without enough protection. I bought these and they are just wonderful. I bought a small and a medium size, just to be safe, and both were invaluable at different times. The latex inner lining glove ensured comfort - not that I found any sharp edges anywhere on the plastic splint, but the glove was reassuring. At the beginning, I could not bear the pain of putting my thumb through the glove, so I cut a bit off the length of the thumb cover, and also, cut open the wrist opening a bit, so that I could get my hand in without pain. The glove did not fray or pull, it remained intact, but with an easier opening to manage, and allowed me comfort and protection. I did cover the whole thing with a further wrist splint, for added protection, and to keep my wrist still, and prevent accidental movement, and the whole thing worked brilliantly. I can't recommend highly enough - they are are really quality item, and worth every penny.Six weeks on from the operation, and I am still using them, but a bit less, but I am SO thankful that I found them. Absolutely fantastic!

Ouch
I have de Quervain's. GP recommended a thumb spica (by phone in these pandemic times). He was unable to prescribe but gave me an idea what to look for. I decided to invest as have been in so much pain for almost 3 months. I can see why this is designed as it is and on wearing initially thought was going to be fine. However, I am also a lady of a certain age, which possibly has relevance, but the bone in my right hand side of my wrist is agony , as is the area just below and ANYthing sitting on that area for more than a minute or two is agony beyond belief. I could cry it is so painful.Unfortunately, this product sits on top of that area. I tried inserting a pad, a very thick pad, on top of my wrist bone to cushion it and wear this splint but sorry no. Agony, and the area would swell up alarmingly. Twenty quid down the drain! If you have de Quervain's and the pain is in more than your thumb, this is probably not for you. No idea what is, but not this.

Uncomfortable & poor fit
Too rigid for me and uncomfortable. It seemed wide at the base of the thumb, but the actual length from top of the thumb to the wrist seemed too short. I know it’s supposed to prevent movement of the thumb but if I’d have worn it, I felt it would have rubbed. The slinky material underneath used as protection wasn’t any use either. Feel for the price of it, could have been better. Not for me.

Perfect
Perfect fit and keeps my thumb completely firm. The size it ideal and with the light colour makes it far less bulky and noticeable compared with others on the market. Very happy with this purchase.
