Japanese conventions are confusing!
The first problem was that swiping from right-to-left didn't get the book going. Only when I accidentally swiped left-to-right did I realise that was the "correct" way to proceed. The next problem was that reading the panels of a page left-to-right didn't convey the story sequentially. I had to teach myself to read panels right-to-left. A panel "row" with one "tall" panel accompanied by two "short" panels is read "top-to-bottom". Quite confusing!

A great mixture of interesting characters, humour and dark fantasy. If you enjoyed the dark theme that Soul Eater had, then I'd definitely recommend this.

Solid Start from the Creator of Soul Eater
After finishing the 25 volume Soul Eater and its Spin-off series, manga author Atsushi Ohkubo is back to bring his jaw-dropping art to another action series. An outbreak of a spontaneous human combustion disease has resulted in citizens either developing fire-based powers or transforming them into rampaging demonic creatures called 'Infernals'. To handle this situation, the army, church and fire department has pooled their resources to create the Fire Force. The Fire Force is devoted to the protecting the public from the Infernal threat and putting the Infernals to rest through exorcism, while also search for both the cause and the cure to this plague on all mankind. The series starts with some episodic adventures that let us get used to the setting. Sort of just ‘days in the life of the Fire Force’. We learn about new recruit to the Fire Force and main character, the demonically-grinning Shinra, meet the other members of Company 8 and watch them respond to emergencies. It's pretty simple, but effective. Other members include the hopeless romantic and vicious soldier Maki Oze, the strait-laced and cynical Takehisa Hinawa, the noble but powerless Captain of the Company Akitaru Obi, the kind-hearted nun Iris and the knightly Arthur Boyle. So far they are all fairly standard characters with fairly normal fire-based superpowers, but the chapters that highlight Captain Akitaru showcase the layers of his personality quite well and results in him being a very likeable person. Meaning that it's more than likely that we will learn more about this cast and their motives in the future. In addition to the members of Company 8, we catch brief glimpses of various other characters in and outside the Fire Force. Showing that this universe has room to expand, while ending on a strong cliffhanger. The biggest strength of the series is the art. Shinra's quest to uncover the secrets behind the death of his family and prove himself as a hero is and well and good, as is the comedy, but Ohkubo's art might be some of the best in modern manga. With a intricately drawn steam-punk setting, uniforms that reflect each character differently and villains that exude a powerful sense of menace: the only thing that is better than Ohkubo's designs is his art during action scenes. Even in this short, early fights it's clear that Ohkubo's choice to give Shinra the ability to generate fire from his feet (this power is call the 'Devil's Footprints') was a very wise decision because Ohkubo excels at showing motion through his art.If you enjoyed Soul Eater or the early days of Bleach: Fire Force might be what you're looking for. It just might take a few volumes before it fully takes off, but the first volume of Fire Force show a lot of promise.
