Bethlehem: A Novel

A Timely Reminder
Yes, it is most definitely a book about love, family, and secrets. And, the writing is lyrical and poetic and flows effortlessly. While this is more than enough to make Bethlehem an enchanting and captivating read, neither the narrative topics nor the gorgeous writing are the reason the book is so memorable. This is the rare book that manages to remind us of what really matters in life. It does so, not by preaching, but rather, by letting us into the lives of people who understand and exemplify the values of selflessness, love, modesty, humility, compassion, and obligation to one’s broader community and family. Wealth does not lead the Parrish family to retreat to a walled enclave or to consider their wealth as a birthright that elevates them above others. They gather with, love, cherish, and confide in people from all walks of life and remind us that we are all family. Bethlehem is a lovely reminder of the best that we can be —- graceful, kind, patient, and generous.

Well written, poignant story - highly recommend.
I think this is the fastest I ever finished a book - couldn’t put it down. A very poignant story with likable characters. The author moves back and forth between two time periods and writes in a way that makes the settings just as interesting as the characters. Easy to follow, well written. Highly recommended.

Old money, old loves, old family secrets...
Old money, old loves, old secrets, old family skeletons in the closet! A great read not only due to the seductive plot but because Ms Kelly is a beautiful writer. Wonderfully crafted intrigue woven together with wonderfully crafted writing.

Meh
I wanted to like this book. Admittedly it got slightly better as it went on. But I found her going back and forth in time annoying and her writing style sophomoric at best. I opened the book at random to provide a few examples. Page 248, "She nodded mutely. Despite the sorrowful topic, she couldn't help feeling a bit relieved at the companionable tenor of the conversation." Or again at random, Page 41. " Halfway up Broadway he watched in amazement as Chap stopped dead in his tracks. Reeling back a few steps, he stood frozen on the street, staring at a cluster of cedars. As Kit reached him-- winded beyond sensibility-- he heard a muffled shout." If this kind of writing is for you, then you'll enjoy this clumsily written tale.

Family secrets. Wow.
Loved the characters and the slip back and forth from the 1920’s to 1960’s. Could not put it down. Stayed up after my bedtime to finish and was richly rewarded with the Epilogue.
