The thumb roller is used to gradually move the scale to the object you are measuring. The slider clamp screw lets you lock down the scale if you want to refer back to the reading later on or if it will be stored in place where they may be frequent movement, such as a car because when the jaws move, the display automatically turns on. No worries, the display will auto shutoff after 5 minutes if no operation is detected. This will measure in MM, Inches and Fractions. MM - given up to 2 precision Inches - given up to 3 precision, eg. 2.154 There are 3 buttons around the display. Top Button changes the measurement, mm/in. Lower Left Button turns the display On/Off Lower Right Button is the Zero button and operates like a TARE button on a scale. Here, you would simply zero the scale out when the jaws are closed.
