the soundtrack was as good as the film itself both are great

OK, let's deal with what would otherwise be the elephant in the room: the film this accompanies is truly dire. Really. Just awful.But the music: blimey. A collection of themes as good as anything he's written since at least 1983. The score starts with a minor key theme which is complemented throughout by what is almost its major key version. There's also a triumphant fanfare which comes in about halfway through the film. Another effective part is the fast buzzing theme on cellos and basses used for the fight scenes.As an extra, the famous Irish folk music group (no, that's not an oxymoron) The Chieftains play two Williams themes at various points.Standout tracks for me are Joseph's Dream (which contains all the main themes in a perfect 3 minutes) and The Land Race (thematically unrelated to anything else, but triumphantly rollicking and contains some of the best bass drum thumps ever recorded on CD - if your sitting room doesn't shake, buy some better speakers!).

The more I listen to this CD, the more I fall in love with it. Two thumbs WAY UP! This is an underrated John Williams score, that everyone should own.

Bien que le film n'ait pas vraiment marqué l'histoire du cinéma, la BO de John Williams mérite d'être sauvée de l'oubli. Le génie de l'homme n'est plus à démontrer. Ici, il se coule avec son aisance habituelle dans le moule qui aurait pu être contraignant du folklore irlandais, et il s'en sort, comme toujours, avec maestria, livrant un score tour à tour enjoué et mélancolique, explorant les ressources du genre avec entrain et brio. Des gigues endiablées aux balades cristallines, John Williams s'en est visiblement donné à coeur joie, et c'est communicatif.

Ich mag die Kompositionen von John Williams ja grundsätzlich, aber das ist einer meiner liebsten (neben dem genialen Jurassic Park). Die irischen Akzente kommen gut durch und wenn ich das höre wünsche ich mir immer in Irland zu sein.
