Review: Real But Wonderful Blast From The Past - Now Loved By My Own Child - I won't give away my age but when I spotted this on DVD it was an instant must have purchase as this had been one of my favourite films growing up. My Nan still has this film on video from when she bought it for me many years ago but as video players are pretty much obsolete nowadays and neither myself nor any friends and family own one, the video has sat unloved (but not fogotten!) on my Nan's video shelf (which she refuses to throw the contents of it away) for many years. I was actually browsing for a different DVD for my son when this came up in the "customers who purchased this also purchased..." list and as I said above it was an instant add to basket and purchase. My son is absolutely addicted to the DVD at the moment and has this on almost every morning before breakfast. It is so nice and very strange to see my own son getting so much enjoyment out of a film that I thought I'd never watch again let alone the 50 or so times I've now watched it with him! Surprisingly the film quality is actually really good and even the sound and music has been transferred onto DVD okay. The story is the same and tells of The Last Unicorn who sets out to find the rest of the Unicorns and what has happened to them. She finds out from a funny bird that the Unicorns have been taken by the Red Bull and then later that the Red Bull is being commanded by King Haggard. After being captured by a witch and a run in with a Harpy she meets up with the magician Smendrick who vows to help her. Other characters include Prince Lear, Molly and a drunk skeleton (I think the mention of the skeleton may jog memories who watched this when they were young). Like other reviewers have said, I knew the songs and the words to them within a few seconds of hearing them again and I can't believe all the parts and music I had forgotten. A real but wonderful blast to the past and still an enjoyable film even for the future generations. If you loved this film when you were a child then you'll fall in love with it all over again. Not quite a masterpiece but essential viewing for animation fans
I had never heard of this film before but I love animation and had heard good reviews of this film. It's a Rankin Bass film and like all his films has a really unique and interesting style. It really looks gorgeous and has some excellent visual moments and ideas. The voice acting is top notch and Mia Farrow is exactly what a unicorn should sound like. Christopher Lee delivers the doom but also sorrow and heartbreak underneath those dark baritones. Alan Arkin is fun and Jeff Bridges sings! One of the great things of a Rankin Bass film is that it's never afraid to go dark and scary, there is a ugly harpy hag and a demonic Red Bull that is a brooding, destructive masculine presence that contrasts brilliantly with the frail, wispy feminine Unicorn. The songs performed by America work well whilst watching the film but you won't remember them by the time the credits roll. The story is your standard Hero's tale but the emotions really work and you genuinely feel sorry for the Unicorn and even for the bad guy at times because he's such a well rounded character. The ending leaves some loose ends and a band of Robin Hood loving bandits are introduced then completely dumped. However, these are minor flaws which stop the film being five stars but certainly don't ruin it and the film is still an entertaining and visually impressive film. The climax is especially amazing and a beautiful, fantastic sequence and one of my favorite animated scenes of all time. I won't spoil it but once you've seen it you will remember how breathtaking this climax is long after the credits roll.

Lovely
I bought this purely for nostalgic reasons. I remembered this film from when I was tiny. I know the red bull scared the living daylights out of me when I was 4 haha, but wanted to see it again as an adult. It's a lovely film, well worth watching.

Words can't express how much I love this story
Words can't express how much I love this story. Loved it as a child, when it was just a beautiful fantasy story about hope and the power of love. Loved it even more when I re-visited it as an adult and now I'm taking some very differenty things from it. These days, it reads more like a quest for authenticity/truth, the power of courage versus fear, all in a wider senser and in the narrower context of art and the artist (some lines will hit a creative person or artist right in the heart). It even has a spiritual level - you could read it as the quest of the soul for its true purpose (and again, the power of love) - as the unicorn becomes human, she learns what it means to be human, and this will hit anybody in the heart who's ever wondered why on earth did they incarnate on this weird and wonderful planet. :) I think the true power of a story is measured by how it remains relevant as we grow and mature - anybody, regardless of age or background, will take something from this story, which to me is the mark of true greatness. A wonderful story, and a film I keep giving as a present to anybody who'll have it.

very enjoyable
Nice film, very innocent, my ten year old Son really enjoyed it, he loved the magician trying to do his tricks. The story is about a Unicorn that overhears Robin Hood say she is the last of her kind, so needing to know if this is true, she leaves the forrest that has been her safe place for so long and goes in search of the Red Bull, who she has heard from a butterfly, has sent all the other Unicorns to the ends of the earth. She gets captured by a Witch on the way, makes friends with a magician who joins her on her quest, and plenty more surprises, you will have to watch the film for your self or I will spoil it.

The Last Unicorn is a beautiful story about the last unicorn in the world on an adventure to find more of her kind. On the way she meets colourful characters such as Schmendrick the Magician, Mommy Fortuna and Molly Grue . I love the music as it is beautifully written and sung.I love the movie and I would like to read the book. The Last Unicorn is an enchanting tale that all children will love.

Excelente Steelbook.

A Complete movie, and full of nostalgia.
This is one of the best movies that I have bought from Amazon.co.jp. As a late thirties father who speak only English to his children it is sometimes hard to find good television and good movies for my daughters to watch in English, we currently live in Japan. I thought of this movie and how I liked watching it on Sunday afternoon when the Buffalo fox station would play it. I was pleased to see that it was super cheap. I watched the movie with my daughters last week and they could not stop talking about it. We watched it again last night and they are still talking about it. For that fact alone it is a good purchase. The movie itself really stands out from all the other animated movies not only from that time but from all times. The characters have a sense of realism as they make mistakes and are not clear cut character troups. Some characters are truely evil and when they get what they deserve in the narrative they still win. The animation is old by current standards but that does not mean that it is bad. It is qiute endering and a real pleasure to watch. Many animated movies require multipule watchings to enjoy all the hard work that the animators put into the film and this one is no different. There are some people who are up in arms about how the film has been edited, where a few swear words are replaced or edited out. This is true but it did not stop me from enjoying the film. I didn't know where the swear words were in the movie so my suspension of belief was not disrupted. This movie is fantastic and a joy to watch. The projects that these animators went onto afterwards was helping Miyazaki in Studio Ghibli make Naussica and the Valley of the Wind.

Fantasy Klassiker
