Scenic Driving South Carolina

South Carolina is a diverse little state. This is the state that contains Charleston and Myrtle Beach, beaches and mountains, cities and plantations. It's all here.Perhaps the fact that it's all here makes preparation of a comprehensive travel guide hard to do. Jim Morekis does an excellent South Carolina guide for the Moon series. So how does this one compare?First of all, this book is written in the popular "scenic driving" format. All the goodness that South Carolina has to offer is distilled down into 24 pretty good driving tours, and you know what? It works. I've done several of these tours, and I can happily report that they are well designed and authentic.The author does a good job of dividing the state up into historic landmarks, natural sites, and cultural attractions to appeal to all interests. This is not a traditional travel guide in that it does not offer comprehensive listings of hotels and restaurants. Most of the tours in the book are easily completed in an afternoon, so extended room and board will generally not be required. The author includes links to lodging and dining options in brief information sections at the end of each chapter.My only complaint is that the coverage gets a bit thin in certain areas. The interesting towns of York and Clemson are essentially absent from the guide, and the larger cities get pretty slim treatment too. This is really a guide to country and small town day trips, and as a guide to those things it succeeds. Some interesting towns, such as Abbeville, Camden and Chester, get extended treatment that might actually draw you to these places that you might not otherwise have visited.For me, a travel guide succeeds when I can use it to discover many new things I didn't otherwise know about. This one is like that.

Very hard to read and to keep your attention

Very well written and described journeys that I just can't wait to take in my home state!

I purchased this book for my daughter who just moved to mid SC. I looked it over before giving it to her, then I heard her reading it to her dad. Both thought it was a good short trip reference book.

I had a specific need for driving information around the McCormick area. Other maps and guides turned out to be more helpful.

Friends who have a house in South Carolina were looking for a book on places to travel to and they were quite excited to get this book.

If you live in South Carolina and have a unrelenting need to explore, this is your book. Each route is unique and they all end somewhere incredible. Awesome.
