Sonny At The Prime Of His Talents!
Honestly I first came to Sonny Rollins albums through his neglected late 70's period albums such as The Way I Feel and Don't Ask . The only song I was really all that familiar with was the Caribbean tinged hard bop classic "St.Thomas" which you will find as the opener for this album. My father in particular was the one who turned me onto this collection:he was something that he'd had since it came out and he had the opportunity to see Sonny live around the time Prestige released this. One of the things that makes this album so special is how it collects music showcasing Rollins with everyone from Thelonious Monk,Kenny Drew,The Modern Jazz Quintet,Clifford Brown,John Coltrane and the Miles Davis Quintet. True this all has the feeling of a jazz all-star collection but at the same time when you listen to the music it's really amazing! All of these big musical personalities don't sound like they should be able to function together but somehow,at least in terms of musical collectivity everyone involved managed to let their ego fly out the window. "The Way You Look Tonight" with Monk and the 'Trane duet "Tenor Madness" find Sonny and his big time musical collaborators finding no difference in where one starts and the other begins. This is an album that emphasizes uptempo songs: a very big high point in jazz history as post bop was being born and thanks to people like Sonny and Dizzy Gillespie before him that "spanish tinge" was being heavily dropped into the music yet again. You can here that very heavily on songs like "Mambo Bounce". On "Paradox" and the bluesy "Count Your Blessings" you have Clifford Brown's cleaner lines,as with Trane on sax melding with Sonny's more playful,all-over-the-place sound. And yet Sonny's line is always clean too. It's really amazing how musicians like him were able to cross those bridges. Even though I generally don't like to have music seperated from it's original album context, especially since these songs all come from the golden age of the 33 RPM vinyl record album this collection is brilliant not in so much as it whets the appitite for more Sonny Rollins music but rather that it in itself has a theme and the songs are assembled in such a way that they actually sound as if they're part of the same album. And when you collect an artists musical classics in that manner your onto something good. So this is a great compilation album after all these years and for most people just the place I'd recommend you get to begin enjoying Sonny Rollins' music.

Gray Market
This is a gray market CD collection made from other CDs or MP3s. The artist doesn’t get a dime.

For the student of a great player.
The quality of Rollins’ work is beyond dispute during this great period. All that is in question then is the quality of the transfer? Well it’s good to my ears and the credits are adequate.

SAXOPHON COLOSSUS. PREIS COLOSSUS.
Ick freu mir!
