As a linguist who has studied Irish for a little over 20 years, I still believe this is the best beginner book of Irish for those otherwise averse to "heavy grammar" type text books. It's not technical at all, but the vocabulary and sentences taught in the book are very useful, and the organization according to themes and patterns make the Irish language easy to grasp. The characters are funny and easy to relate to.I enjoy using this book with my young children.As a side note, one also learns from this book what life in Ireland must have been like in the 1960s, and gleans also from it just how much the world has, and has not, changed since then, especially for women and children.

Buntús Cainte is a great course for learning Irish. It does not include grammar explanations so you'll need other materials for that, but for memorizing vocabulary and phrases listening to these CDs has helped me enormously.

Be sure to buy it new or make sure it mentions having CD's. A used book without CD's is useless. Make no mistake it takes a lot of practice but find it very valuable. I frankly think a few tips about how vowels and constanants are pronounced are very necessary also to help you verify what you think you hear, but these are accessible online. I particularly like that when introducing new material they speak slowly, then use it in conversation style which is of course much faster to acclimate your ear.

A well conceived approach to learning what can at best be described as a "challenging" language. The inclusion of the CD and the drawings means that the student is able to see and hear the words at the same time, thus enabling what is commonly called the audio-visual approach. Grammar can be imparted visually rather than through endless rules and lists, and vocabulary is learned through situations. It is no surprise that this book has its legendary reputation; it is clearly as good as it gets for students who do not have daily access to a teacher.

This is a great book for getting started and there are many resources online that go along with the book. I am taking a beginning Irish language class and this is the book they use in class. The simple conversations build on each other throughout the book, so before you know it you are able to have a basic conversation in Irish!

If you wish to speak Gaeilge buy this and parts 2 & 3. A suberb course that will get you having real conversations from lesson one. No complicated grammar, no verb tables etc you can do all that afterwards.This will get you speaking confidently ( and if you wish reading and writing ). Each lesson is very short but effective and if you follow its recommendation of little and often you will soon find yourself thinking in Gaeilge. If only all language courses were as good

Fantastic little book for the beginner in Irish language learning. The CDs give clear pronunciation and the book, even only though it is only A5 size, is easy to read and be taken anywhere. There is also an app linked to the course.
