Great series
Agent Pendergast and his ward Constance travel to a Tibetan Monastery to help Constance get over killing Pendergast 's brother. ( this happened in a previous book) While there they learn an ancient artifact, one that can supposedly end all human race, has been stolen from the monastery and they ask Pendergast if he will seek out the thief and return it. The chase finally leads to a new ocean liner leaving England bound for New York. Gaining a berth at the last minute Pendergast and Constance board the ship with the idea of using deduction to narrow the possible suspects to a manageable number. Pendergast soon finds himself battling a power that threatens to overwhelm him.A very good thriller that takes place almost entirely on board a great ocean liner. A very different and enjoyable setting.

Fun, but I'm not a fan of the supernatural elements
Another interesting read featuring our favorite stylish FBI agent Pendergast and his sidekick Constance Green. This one gives a refreshing change of background, exchanging the busy streets of New York for a luxury ocean liner's maiden voyage. Pendergast finds himself in pursuit of a passenger that has stolen an ancient and dangerous Tibetan relic, and as usual, things quickly spiral into murder and mayhem. As a fan of the series, I'm not sure how to feel about this one. On the one hand, it's a Pendergast book, so as usual it's very well researched, full of interesting scenes, and moves quickly for 500 + page novel. There's some fascinating detail in here regarding the operations of cruise liners, and one scene in particular with Pendergast matching wits with a group of card counters in the ship's casino was brilliant. Great stuff. On the other hand, this book incorporates some things I'd have to describe as supernatural, going far beyond previous oddities like Mbwun from Relic and the Wrinklers from Reliquary. For me, that takes away from what makes the Pendergast books so great. Another solid story, but don't expect realism here.

Theft, Cruise Ship and Mystery
Once again, I have been entertained. So much action and story lines that flow together easily. I recommend this story but be ready to be on the edge of your seat in parts😎

I enjoyed reading this story. This story starts in the Himalayan mountains and ends in the Himalayan mountains. Prendergast and his ward tackle evil and human greed!!!

It passed the time
I have loved the Pendergast series but this book was boring. I'm not a fan of the new narrator either. I am anxious for this book to be over so I can move on to the next. It the next is this bad I will abandon the series.

Monks, murder, and mayhem... Oh my!
I've read the first eight books of this series back to back, and I honestly can't choose a favorite so far! Every book has been different and exciting. The Wheel of Darkness is damn good and dare I say, scary as hell!! I loved it!!!☺☺

A little tired, but effective continuation of the saga
It still amazes me that I am so addicted to the books of Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child. They are eons away from my usual read (literally!). I was trapped in a horrific traffic jam in Virginia's Mixing Bowl and desperate for something other than the radio. I just happened to have The Relic on tape in the car. It had been foisted on me by a wacky friend and I was going to return it unheard but a few minutes in and I was hooked. Maybe it was because the story unfolded so effectively through the spoken word, but I've listened to all of the Preston/Child books on tape (and now CD) ever since, including Wheel of Darkness.Yes, the series is showing some wear and tear. This book definitely suffers from the absence of Pendergast's posse; he's left to carry the story with his ward Constance who, frankly, gets on my nerves. But I was very surprised at the direction the series has now taken. Because of the plotline of The Book of the Dead, I assumed that Wheel of Darkness, which followed, would be a way to wrap up a whole bunch of loose ends involving Aloysius, Constance, and his fantastically evil brother Diogenes. Not so, mes amis! In a turn that felt like a trip onboard the Titanic to recover an artifact from a Tibetan monastery that could literally destroy the world, we are treated to a whole host of desperate characters and get to try and sort out the allies from the enemies. I think you don't go into these books expecting great literature, but you do expect a good story and I felt like I got one. Not to mention a pretty serious shock ending!

Probably the lowest of this series
Not so happy with this one. Skipped a lot of pages just to finish it. Weak story of all. A lot less of action from Pendergast.

The wheel of darkness by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child (Agent Pendergast book 8) As always no spoilers
Wow what a story, i have read all of the agent Pendergast stories from books 1- 8 now and i can say with all honesty that i have enjoyed them all.Agent Pendergast and his ward Constance Green arrive at a monastery high in the mountains of Tibet, this is the place where Pendergast learned his 'tricks' (see some of the earlier Pendergast novels . . . When i say no spoilers i mean no spoilers.) The monks have had something very valuable (to them art least) and very dangerous, stolen from them, it is something that, in the wrong hands, could endanger the the human race. Pendergast and Constance are sent to retrieve it and return it to the monasteryFrom Portsmouth, England to the high seas they search, dodging a serial killer and an evil entity on-board the biggest ocean liner ever seen, packed with over 4,500 passengers and crew on her maiden voyage.Very highly recommended, and i don't say that lightly. Don't miss this one, it's a real beauty.
