Trouble Shooter: A Novel

The torch is passed from Mulford to L'Amour to write 4 classic Hopalong Cassidy great westerns.
I'm a huge fan of the late Louis L'Amour and have bought and read 24 of his westerns, 3 short story collections, his sci fi Haunted Mesa, The Last of the Breed, Lonesome Gods, Walking Drum and his first book of poems...Smoke from This Altar. INMO one of America's greatest authors and not just a Western writer but much more. L'Amour the only author to receive the Congressional Gold Medal and The Presidential Medal of freedom by President Reagan. The originator of the classic Western hero Hopalong Cassidy was Clarence E. Mulford. When he retired he passed the torch to the younger Louis L'Amour to write Hopalong Cassidy novels. L'Amour wrote 4 in the series...all best sellers.Trouble Shooter is great. Hopalong Cassidy saves a man from being dry gulched and takes an interest for a young lady losing her ranch and it "disappearing". He is able to temporarily disguise himself with the name Cameron as he wanted no trouble as he is extremely fast with a gun. We see him and others teeming up to gather cattle that got loose in bad prickly cactus and thorny trees for an evil rancher Tredway. Tredway is actually a wanted outlaw that has killed at least 11 men or more...many in the back. Also the lust 3 outlaws had for $60,000 in gold and two of them murdered. Lots of beautiful scenery description and a great plot in this book. Lots of fighting, gun fighting, cattle collecting, lots of murders, double crossing and "Frontier Justice" given out. Cassidy uses his brain a lot to get out of trouble , but when needed is very good with a gun. This book is a Western Classic. No wonder it was a best seller. I liked it so much, I plan to buy the other 3 best sellers in the Louis L'Amour Hopalong Cassidy book series at used prices to read and add to our family library. If you like Westerns you will love Trouble Shooter. 5 stars.

If you are a fan of western stories and characters like Hopalong Cassidy, you should read this L'Amour's novel.
I have read quite a few western stories by the late Louis L’Amour but this is the first (Trouble Shooter) Hopalong Cassidy novel I have read. I found it such a compelling read that I finished half the novel the first time I picked it up the book. The original creator of Hopalong Cassidy was Clarence E. Mulford, but when he retired he chose Louis L’Amour to continue with the Hopalong Cassidy novels. Louis wound up writing four Hopalong Cassidy novels. This one has Hopalong responding to a message from an old friend and fellow cattle puncher. He finds his old friend, Pete Melford, had been murdered. Pete Melford had left his ranch to his niece Cindy Blair but there are complications involving ruthless killers. Hopalong is determined to find the killers and help Cindy Blair locate her Uncle’s ranch.I never like to give away too much when reviewing a novel because it spoils it for the reader; however, if you are into Louis L’Amour’s western tales, you should check out this Hopalong Cassidy novel. I found it a page turning action packed western story.Rating: 5 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author: The Samurai Soul: An old warrior’s poetic tribute).

I enjoyed the entire Hopalong series
I enjoyed the entire Hopalong series. A close second to Chick Bowdrie. A little funny about the cover illustrations...while they are some nice pieces of art, it appears the artist does not bother to read the book he is representing. If he had, the clothing would be more accurate. Is that too much to ask? As it is Bantam paid good money when they could have just gotten some random cowboy picture from shutterstock, etc. Regarding the actual plot line, I had thought the monks were just some filler but they turn out to be the key to the identity of the criminal. He was already bad enough on his own. Not quite ready to swallow the fact that the monks are the ones who execute justice.

Classic L'Amour in a unique style
This is a classic application of L'Amour's style, yet noticeably different as required by the Hopalong people who are producing this storyline. Great fun and dramatic western adventure. Louis' son Beau has added commentary that will be of interest to all L'Amour fans.

Great read
Although I had read the book before, I was once again captivated by the skill of the author leading me through the various plots making up the story.

I've Enjoyed All The Hopalong Novels
We get a mystery, just how does a ranch go missing? a look at rounding up cattle in close bush where thorns and prickley pear are as dangerous as aggressive steers. Throw in gunslingers, a dry gulcher and weird monks for a ripping good tale. I've now read all 4 Hopalong novels by L'Amour and can attest that they are well worth the read by anyone who likes the western.
