Didn't work for me!
The transfer software never worked for me. The PC I was replacing overheated every time I tried to accomplish the transfer and shut itself off requiring a restart and then beginning the transfer all over. Never could get there before shut-down. It might have been very nice. I'll never know.

Helped pull off a miracle
My wife uses the original Quicken program which is pure DOS. She says it does all she needs and upgrading to Quicken 2008 would entail intermediary moves thru 2 other year versions - lots of work. I had issues getting it from ME to XP and when the screen went out on her laptop and I had to go to Vista I was sure it would be a disaster. PCMover moved it (and every other file) without a hitch. I had read the commentaries before hand and they were either 5 stars or 1 star. The big thing I took away from the commentaries was "READ THE DIRECTIONS BEFORE TOUCHING THE COMPUTER". Well I read them and followed the instructions to a tee and was rewarded for having done so. I used our home WiFi network not the USB cable and it was very quick and efficient. There were a few conflicts that needed to be straightened out...the contacts list from Outlook Express was not in Outlook or Windows Live so I had to move it by hand. Same thing with Outlook saved emails. That was the only thing that did not go over clean. The latest version lets you pick and choose so clean it up before migrating the files. Also, make sure you take off the firewall and virus scan programs on both computers. If it goes as well for you as it did for me you'll think the dollars spent were well worth it.

Not Recommended
I thought that this product would handle the movement of my files and programs from my old to my new computer. I read the reviews and saw the problems with the USB 1.1 cable, but I thought that it was finally upgraded to a 2.0 cable. It wasn't, so I used the LAN connection and the movement took FOREVER! While most programs were moved correctly, some were not and had to be reinstalled. If I had to do it over again, I would use the transfer utility included with Vista (or at least the HP version of Vista). On a positive note, when the transfer setup failed, the support was excellent.

Very Bad experience! Had to format & start over...
With as big a project of moving into a new computer is, I thought I would give this a try... big mistake.Initially the product did as advertised all the data and programs were moved over and I was excited "That was sure worth the $40." I said... then later in the day things started to happen.MS Word's list of recently used files was not being updated when I used something not on the list... turns out the list would not update anymore."Windows Auto Update" was on and the system tray icon indicated updates were downloaded and ready to install... I indicated that it should proceed... all updates failed. There were issues with the video card so I called Dell and asked for help, more issues came up. The 3rd level tech connected to my computer using "Dell Connect" and going through the "Remove Programs" option in the Control Panel he turns on "show updates"... their were updates that showed they were installed back in 2004... the tech asked how those would be on the machine... I explained that I had used PCMover and he indicated that he could not help anymore, that what I had done relieved Dell from helping... unless I reformatted the drive and started with the drive "as shipped"... which I did.So I spent $40 went through the PCMover process and ended up having to do everything by had anyway...I'm not happy. I have asked Amazon for a refund... haven't heard back yet.

PCMover Saves Time and Hassle
I have used PCMover twice now for moving programs, settings and files from old computers to new computers. The results have been great. Not all programs will move flawlessly. Some I have had to reinstall, reactivate or adjust settings. I found that it was much better to uninstall any programs that are not moving from the old to the new computer before beginning the transfer. I found that uninstalling the anti-virus and firewall software to be the most important to unintall from the old compouter before starting the transfer. I have used the 2.0 USB cable for the fastest transfers. Make sure you have an existing 2.0 USB port on your old computer or your transfer time will be long.

Transfer from Win 98 to Vista
This product made my life much easier. After thoroughly researching this presumable nightmare of a transfer I didn't feel as if I had any other options but to give it a try. I had a ll year old computer with Windows 98 and needed to transfer to my new Vista computer. You have to be pretty obsessive about following the written instructions to the letter. When it is time to select the items that you want to move, make sure that you expand each category so that you can be very specific about what to transfer. Worked like a charm and couldn't be happier. Good Luck!

Laplink PCMover
Laplink PCmover is no doubt the worst product that I've paid money for in a very long time! After multiple times attempting to transfer files from my old Windows XP computer to my new Windows Vista computer with Laplink's PCmover (with their cable), the program crashed before completing the transfer. After crashing the program would tell you to re-do the transfer, but the amount of transferred data would occupy the new hard disk with no means to delete the transfer or reverse the transfer. Each attempt would continue to reduce the new hard disk space. After 4 attempts and watching my hard disk on the new pc reduced by 100GB I finally re-formatted the hard disk and had to re-install the operating system and all associated files.Laplink's online customer service denied that PCmover occupied any space on the new pc, however I could see the available space reduced after each attempt via Properties. After wasting some 30 hours of screen time, I finally moved my files via Windows Easy Transfer cable.I would not recommend Laplink's PCmover program. It's NOT the nice convenient program that it used to be!
